Sub-Inspector Karan Singh of police station-3 arrived at the spot after about 15 minutes. The conversation between the lensman and the SI:
SI Karan Singh: Kaun sa lens tha? Ye kaise bag me chod diya? Isko camere ke saath kyon nahi rakha? (Which lens was it? Why did you leave it in the bag? Why did not you keep it with the camera?)
Lensman: I was asked by a security guard to leave my bag near the stage for security reasons. When I came back, I found my bag had been moved from its earlier spot and the lens missing.
SI: Kaun si complaint likhwani hai? Teen-chaar kisam ki complaint hoti hai? Tere ko kaun si chahiye? (Which complaint do you want to lodge? There are three-four kinds of complaints. Which one do you want?)
Lensman: The same complaint that you lodge for theft. What else?
SI: To jaao kaagaz le kar aao aur likh do complaint. (So, go get the paper and write your complaint).
Lensman: You get me the paper. It’s your job. Isn’t it?
Then the SI looked for his driver, got a paper from him and asked the lensman to write his complaint. A correspondent with this newspaper wrote the complaint on the paper and handed it over to the SI. This is how the SI responded.
SI: Idhar laao. Isko dekhun to sahi kya likha hai. Ye lens ka kya matlab hai? Ye clicking kya hota hai? Are ye Mountview ke kya spelling hai? Are ye lensman kya matlab? Kit-bag – ye kya hota hai? Are lens ka koi number to hoga? Jaao office se koi kaagaz, koi proof to laao ki lens tumhare paas tha bhi ya nahi? Fir dekhte hain. (Give it to me, I must see if you have written it correct. What do you mean by lens? What is this clicking? How do you spell Mountview? What do you mean by lensman? What is a kit-bag? There must be some number of the lens? Go, get some proof from your office to prove that you had the lens with you? Then we shall see)
It was only after the intervention of the correspondent that the SI agreed to take the complaint after about 30 to 35 minutes. He then asked the lensman to show the spot of theft. On his way, he told the lensman that registration of case is futile. “What will you get out of the FIR? You’ll not get the lens back. Why do you want to waste your time attending court hearings and we will also have to go for court hearings.
