Gandhinagar, March 15 Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Fakirbhai Vaghela on Saturday assured the House that the government would file a criminal case under the Atrocities Act against all those responsible for using “derogatory” words against Dalits in a question paper set for the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) examinations.

Responding to a query raised by the Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil during a debate on budgetary demands of his department, Vaghela said he had directed senior officials to inquire into the use of “derogatory” words in the question paper, and if, those involved in the setting of the paper and giving approval for it were found guilty then, a case would be registered against them under the Prevention of Atrocities Act.

Participating in the debate on budgetary demands of Social Justice and Empowerment and Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities, Gohil alleged that the derogatory words used in the question paper set for the GPSC exam could attract provisions under the Prevention of Atrocities Act, and demanded that a case under this Act be registered against those involved in it.

Gohil also criticised the government for making paltry allocations for the welfare of Dalits in the 2008-09 Budget. As per the Planning Commission's guidelines, a state has to make budgetary allocations proportionate to the population of Dalits in that state.

Although the population of the Scheduled Caste community in Gujarat is 7.09 per cent, the government has allocated funds of only 0.01, 1.86, 1.90 and 3 per cent for the Revenue, Narmada and Water Resources, Energy and Industries departments respectively, he said.
