New Delhi, September 5: Three days into his fresh jail term, Sanjeev Nanda looked dejected and emotionally drained in a Delhi court which on Friday awarded him five years imprisonment in the BMW hit-and-run case.

Nanda, 30, who had spent nine months in jail earlier, was brought to the court of Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar at around 2.55 pm.

The convict, with a stubble of several days, stood close to his octogenarian grandmother Sumitra Nanda, along with other family members, who had arrived earlier and were waiting for the sentencing in the nine-year-old case.

When the judge called his name, Nanda, a management graduate from Wharton Business School in the UK, raised his hand.

The other three convicts, however, looked relaxed as they knew that they would be getting bail even after getting the maximum punishment under Section 201 of the IPC for destruction of evidence.

Minutes after the judge pronounced the sentence against Nanda, his family members including his arms dealer father Suresh Nanda looked shocked. It appeared that they were expecting a lighter punishment.

Coming out of the courtroom, Nanda's father said, "We are very shocked. We will have to take appropriate legal advice on this issue."

Nanda's elder sister Sonali, refusing to speak on the merits of the case, said, "He is my brother who is an introvert and had already undergone the trauma for being involved in this case."

Nanda's counsel Ramesh Gupta and Prem Kumar, however, expressed their dissatisfaction over the court's verdict, saying that there were various lacunae in it and would file an appeal before the High Court.

Some body run a car over his father by Vikas on 06 Sep 2008

I would like to hear from the lawyers defending Sanjeev, what will they do if the Sanjeev or his Sister was run over by some drunken driver. Would they still treat it the same way, is the human life so cheap in India that any rich brat can take life of several people and escape with just 5 years.... This is a horrid act and should have been awarded a life sentence rather then a small time 5 years. I think people should raise the voices like Jesicca murder case, for this issue to be thought over again for the maximum punishment.

seven victims VS dejected Nanda?? by desi on 06 Sep 2008

Shame on media people writing about emotions of a criminal? seven people were crushed to death and he was concerned about damage to his car? His father and grandfather sold country for Money and he bought car with same money. his father and grandfather must be punished for helping the criminal. But In India law is helpless against rich and powerful.

Is media has nothing else to do? by kaka on 06 Sep 2008

Let him suffer in jail. He is a criminal who tried to flee when the helpless victims were crying for help? where were his emotions at that time? This Nanda should rot in jail, so that victims families can feel some divine justice has been done.

It is a matter happiness that inspite of money power that law has prevailed. We have faith in judiciary once again.I know the acse will go to higher and higher court but by then even if Nanda gets freedom he would have suffered and realised a lotR K GARG

Nanda by PRIYA on 06 Sep 2008

This is shamful, he should have been given 5 years per person. He and his family have no value for life.It seems they thought they could buy everything as MONEY RULES IN INDIA,they were so right.I feel sorry for the people who died and for thier families who are still suffering.I request Indian Goverment to do soemthing in favour of them.I feel ashmaed to be an Indian where money is EVERYTHING.
