Kolkata, May 4 Offering much needed relief from the scorching heat, Kolkata was lashed by heavy rainfall this evening. The maximum temperature hovered around 38 degree Celsius in the day, about two degrees above normal. The one hour rainfall that swept the city from 7.30 pm onwards led to a dip in mercury levels. An approaching western disturbance had caused the rain accompanied by thundershowers.

The Met department had predicted Nor’westers in districts of Bankura, Midnapore, Howrah and Hooghly and those in North Bengal. The department forecasts a partly cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thunderstorm over the next 24 hours. The maximum temperature will, however, remain around 36 degrees Celsius.

The comforting weather, however, disrupted flight services at Dum Dum airport.

Seven flights which were scheduled to land between 7.45 pm and 8.15 pm hovered over the airport, as they could not make landing due to bad weather.

Four outgoing flights from Kolkata had to be delayed and an Indigo flight was diverted to Bhubaneswar.
