Thyroid conference kicks off at PGI

Chandigarh, February 9 The two-day annual conference of the Indian Thyroid Society began at the PGI today. With 200 delegates participating, the conference is being organised by the department of Endocrinology and Nuclear Medicine, PGI.

Prof B R Mittal, organising secretary and head of nuclear medicine department, welcomed the delegates and introduced the conference subject.

The topics deliberated included thyroid hormone assays, iodine supplementation programme, congenital hypothyroidism and role of thyroid dysfunction and fertility.

The plenary lecture was given by Prof Kochupillai on the development of thyroid hormone assays and their importance. He also discussed the benefits of universal iodine supplementation programme and neo-natal screening for the diagnosis of hypothyroidism in infants. He stressed on introducing this in our country, to prevent cases of mental retardation.

The role of thyroid disorders during pregnancy was discussed by Dr Rajesh Rajput. Prof C S Bal from AIIMS, New Delhi, spoke on thyroid imaging and its importance. Hyper-function of thyroid and its consequences were also discussed. The role of radio-iodine therapy was highlighted by Prof B K Das from Bhubaneshwar while Prof A K Padhy from Singapore spoke on the role of recombinant TSH in thyroid disorders.
