Chinese media reports stated that Obama had said that the US considers Tibet an integral part of China and has called for resumption of dialogue with the representatives of the Dalai Lama.
Obama's statement shocked the entire Tibetan community, said Tenzin Cheoying, the president of a voluntary, Students for Free Tibet.
"I don't think there is a need to rethink the path of non-violence, but definitely we need to rethink about the path of so-called dialogue with the Chinese government. And, we should not let ourselves believe that the United States would come forward and help us in solving the Tibetan issue or neither should we believe that the European Union or any powerful countries could do that. For us, now, what we firmly believe is that it is only up to the individual Tibetans, all the Tibetans unitedly, we need to come out with new strategy," said Cheoying.
Even if the dialogue takes place, it has to be result oriented, said Dhondup Dorjee, vice president of the Tibetan Youth Congress.
"Whatever he (Obama) stated today, of course, Tibetans in general we welcome his appeal to the Chinese leadership in urging early resumption of dialogue, but a dialogue without any result, dialogue with lots of pre-conditions from the Chinese government and with no intentions to come to a solution, will reach us no where. So, we expect the President to take up the Tibet issue at a higher level, not at the mere usual common stand to encourage dialogue. And, what was the fate of the dialogue we have seen in the 80's and even in the recent dialogue what happened," Dorjee said.
The Tibetan government-in-exile on Tuesday expressed its willingness to hold talks with China after Obama called for a recommencement of dialogue to end the Tibet crisis.
Earlier, Chinese officials and messengers of Dalai Lama have held eight rounds of talks that have not been successful.
Riots and protests against the Chinese presence had hit the roof last year over the Dalai Lama pronouncing that he is looking for autonomy for Tibet.
Obama is scheduled to meet the Dalai Lama after his return to Washington, a meeting that China has strongly opposed.

USA fought a bloody long war in Vietnam for more than three decades against the rise of Communism, but failed and lost the war with heavy loses of lives and finance. Just After that in 80's changed their policy on Communist China, declared their foe China a most favored nation, China wasted no time, took the opportunity, dumped all the cheap goods made by forced labor and made USA heavily indebted with 3 trillions of dollars to China. At present a war in Iraq and Afghanistan with a cost of many billions and losses of lives, a war which is hard to win. Does USA still think they are playing a smart game? Will USA ever learn from it's previous mistakes? Will Obama keep his promises of change?
USA claims to be the champion of human rights all over the world. When Obama said standing on the Chinese soil that Tibet is an integral part of China he did not think for a while about the human rights of many Tibetans who are staying in India away from their home since 1959 due to atrocities committed on them and bringing to an end centuries old Dalai Lama rule over Tibet by the Chinese military. The statement is a travesty of human rights of all Tibetans whose culture is being gradually destroyed by the Chinese. In comparison Nehru promised plebiscite to the people of J and K even when their Maharaja acceeded the state to India under pressure of Pakistani invasion but Pakistan never met the conditions of plebiscite. Why then Obama has a problem in saying that J and K including the portion illegally occupied by Pakistan and China is an integral part of India. We should be wary of America-Pakistan-China nexux in the making.
Tibetans fighting for the freedom of their homeland from China surely realize that no western power or the US, will today dare risk their relationships with China. The Chinese economy is two much interlinked with their own (conjoined twins of the world economy, as some observers note) to offend China. Tibetans, and even Indians, must steer their aspirations and moves taking note of the relations between these 'FRIENEMIES' and must take all roads to achieve their objectives. The muddled middle path will lead us nowhere.
It looks like the treatment from China towards lhasa is like some spoiled child who tears things apart from fear. This fear of china is from a lack of intellect. Their leader, "mao tsay tounger" ,is actually a coward.followers cannot think for themselves. Like hitler, krewchif, fadal, meow; they must destroy what they do not know(mispel on purpose). Like small animals, they to must somehow be shown a better path. Simply cut china off from any of our natural resources ;iron, aluminum, copper, gold, graphite, silver and radium. Like 'moosyleeny',they're country is dependent on foriegn import. Commy-nism never gets past the dictorture-tator stage. They tout equality, but live higher than any of the people who actually make anything. Bullies. In school, i (small i) would be challenged to "Meet me after school to Fight !". What they were unaware of was an abused child. I always won, and they then tried to be my friend. China is falling apart. The smart people are leaving !
Obama was product of media hype.he proved it now.He dont have any vision in afgan or pakistan policy.Soon he becomes americas worst president.
Obama has stabbed Indians and Tibetans in the back and bowed down to his Chinese masters. Obama is no longer the head of the worlds most powerful country. He is the head of a defeated nation that has conceded its position to the Chinese. However for us Indians, we still have to stand firm against the Chinese. It shall be India (not China) that will be tomorrow's superpower. We cannot be a superpower by kowtowing to the Chinese.
Have the Americans ever cared about Tibet or the Tibetans? They allowed the Chinks to take over Tibet without the slightest protest. Tibet, obviously, did not affect American interests. Justice did not interest them.
Obama's appeasement approach to Beijing is akin to Nehru Chini Hindi Bhai Bhai syndrome. US should be watch out its that China may stab from behind like Brutus. Obama like Nehru has Kowtowed to Maoism.
Hay brothers in India, Do you expect US amry fight for us for nothing? come on wake up. Besides, the Dalai Lama had said long time ago, he was not looking for independence. that indirectly indicated Tibet is part of the tibet. It was Dalai Lama's fault, not Obama's.
I don't think US can get worse President than Obama. He must be the lowest in morality and character.
Obama looks more and more like a spineless president.Tibet was invaded and annezed by China and there was no need for him to acknowledge it as part of China.
