Hundreds of protesters assembled in the main Buddhist temple (Chuglakhang Buddhist Monastry) early in the morning. They were addressed by various Tibetan political leaders and heads of non-governmental organisations. Later, they started the march to lower Dharamshala to express their anger against China.
Despite the fact that the Dalai Lama is advocating a middle-way approach and genuine autonomy for Tibet, the marchers were demanding nothing less than freedom for Tibet. After the demonstration at Kachehri Adda, the gathering dispersed in the afternoon.
The protesters even burnt Chinese flags and chanted slogans like “free Tibet” and “stop the killings in Tibet.’’
Shops and restaurants run by Tibetans and other business establishments in the town remained closed for the second day today. Earlier, hundreds of Tibetans, including monks and nuns led by the Dalai Lama, offered prayers in the main Buddhist temple and later His Holiness addressed mediapersons.
Meanwhile, a second group of 45 marchers, which had left on Saturday from Dehra and had crossed Kangra, today reached Amb in Una district on Sunday. The marchers remained peaceful throughout the route and created no law and order problem. The marchers plan to reach Tibet as the Beijing Olympics begin in August.
Protesters gathered in the main Buddhist temple this evening and organised a candlelight vigil in McLeodganj. They also offered prayers for those who laid down their lives in Tibet. Speaker of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile T.T. Karma Chophel said they express their solidarity and support those holding demonstrations against the repressive policies of the Chinese authorities in Tibet.
