Instead of reprimanding the violators or asking for fine from them, the Navi Mumbai traffic police offered them tilgul and til laddoos on the occasion of Makar Sankranti and advised them to follow traffic rules. The special drive was undertaken across 9 traffic police stations from two zones in Navi Mumbai police commissionerate.
“On usual days we fine the motorists, but today we decided to offer them til-guls and til laddoos on account of Makar Sankrant and advice them to not to break traffic rules and drive safely,” said Arun Walture, police inspector of the Belapur traffic police unit.
“Sweets were given to people who jumped signals, were not wearing seat belts and helmets and were not carrying important documents like the PUC and the insurance papers. In Zone I, we distributed some 2,500 packets of til-gul and til ladoos,” added Walture.
“We were encouraged by Commissioner of Police Ramrao Wagh to carry out this task,” said Nandkumar Chaugule, assistant commissioner of police (traffic).
“The aim behind carrying out the plan was that people should feel ashamed for breaking traffic rules. The general tendency is that people forget about the whole incident once they pay the fine. Also, by doing this we wanted to set an example that even police can be nice to you and speak sweetly.”
