New Delhi, January 22 Standing 6’3” in his socks, Vishal Singh, a resident of Tilak Nagar in Delhi, had a dream. Today, he was firmly on the way to fulfilling that. Out of the 4,000 participants in the Gatorade Pacers 2008 competition the 16-year-old Delhi lad first made it to the finals and then topped the ‘raw’ category with a consistent pace of 120 kmph and line length to assure his place in the three-week pacers’ camp scheduled at the MRF Pace Foundation from January 27.

Right arm outswinger Vishal says that it was his coach Uday Gupte who told him to take part in the pacers competition. “My coach told me about this competition and it was only because of him that I have reached this height. He told me there were trials going on and I should try my hand and his suggestion was helpful,” a happy Vishal told Sportline as he caressed his trophy.

It was only last year that Vishal had gone for the Delhi U-17 trials, but failed to make it to the squad. And he says that he was so dejected that he had doubts whether to continue cricket or not. “I was disappointed and at that time former Test player Maninder Singh and Uday sir stood by me and told me that I shouldn’t be dejected and should concentrate only on my performance and that was helpful,” he said.

Vishal is excited about training under the likes of TA Sekar and Dennis Lillee. “I am very excited to go to MRF Pace Foundation. It is the dream of every pace bowler to go and train there. In fact, even before going there Sekar Sir has really helped me improve my bowling. Earlier, while bowling I never used my left hand but then he rectified my bowling action and also worked a bit on my jump. And now I can myself feel that my bowling has improved and I can deliver the ball much faster,” said the 16-year-old, who idolises Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath.
