Imagine Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock and Professor Calculus on Fergusson College road eating vada pav! Not such a far-fetched vision really, especially given the recent workshop held by Alliance Francaise de Poona and Art 2day where Alain Baran, who assisted Georges Remi (better known as Herge ) in the making of the comic magazine Tintin, spoke to the participants. The workshop that focused on the art of cartooning had students of the Bharati Vidyapeeth's Fine Arts College in attendance.

Baran began by explaining the various facets of cartoon making that make it an indisputable art form. Explaining also their efficacy, he said, “Cartoons need less words, add variety to the content you give to readers and give the desired message with added humour."

Basing his interaction on the world famous Tintin comics, Baran further dwelled on the importance of developing a cartoon character. For instance, he explained how the character of Tintin would be incomplete without Snowy, Captain Haddock, Calculus and others. Less known features of cartoon making such as camera angles, frames, sizes and other technicalities were also touched upon, along with the basics of cartoon drawing. Baran is of the view that when a character becomes familiar to people, it becomes a part of their life. The cartoonist can then have the liberty of having a wordless cartoon or even picture less one with only a few words to reach out to the target audience. Also it is then that the cartoon becomes much more than just the column space allotted to it.

At the end of the session, the organisers also announced a competition named Tintin In Pune, where participants would be asked to give ideas and sketches on the topic. Exhibition of winning entries will be held in January, next year. Like we said, Tintin in Pune? Not such a bizarre thought really.
