kolkata, April 28 In a move, which appears to let the Left-wing Student Federation of India(SFI) gain some ground at the college, a section of teachers at Presidency College is trying hard to do away with the admission tests.

Insiders say that various departments of the college have put forward a proposal that students from rural areas cannot perform well in the entrance examination and in a few departments there is a dearth of students seeking admission in the undergraduate courses. Presidency College is the only college in the state that takes an admission test to admit students at the undergraduate level.

The college sources say that although some departments had put forward the proposal but many departments have vehemently opposed the move. About a month ago, the principal of the college had asked the opinion of various departments on the issue. Of the 17 departments at the undergraduate level, 5 departments have supported the scrapping of the admission test, 11 departments have opposed it and one department has remained indecisive.

The departments that are against the admission test include those of Geology, Bengali and Philosophy.

In a meeting held at the college on Monday, a large section of teachers opposed the idea saying that the decision will dilute the academic standard of the institution.

Sources feel that from this academic session the department that does not want an admission test will be allowed to admit the students without the test.

The General Secretary of West Bengal Government Colleges Teachers College Association and HoD, Geology, Harendranath Bhattacharya, said that he would comment on the issue only tomorrow. The principal of the college Prof Sanjib Chandra Ghosh has denied to comment on the issue.

The SFI had lost in the college elections last month. Over the last few years the student party has failed to hold its ground in the college. The attempt to do away with the admission test is seen as an attempt to benefit the SFI. If the proposal is enforced, it is claimed certain students will be admitted who can help the SFI gaining ground in the century old educational institution.
