To ward off evil, Zardari kills one black goat a day

Islamabad A black goat is slaughtered almost daily to ward off ‘evil eyes’ and protect President Asif Ali Zardari from ‘black magic’. Does this, and the use of camel and goat milk, make the beleaguered president appear to be a superstitious man?

Well, not to his spokesman. “It has been an old practice of Mr Zardari to offer sadqa (animal sacrifice). He has been doing this for a long time,” spokesman Farhatullah Babar told Dawn on Tuesday.

But his detractors would see in his new-found religiosity a sign of nervousness in the wake of the scrapping of the NRO.

One thing is certain: Hundreds of black goats have been sacrificed since Zardari moved into the President’s House in September 2008. His trusted personal servant Bai Khan buys goats from Saidpur village. The animal is touched by Zardari before it is sent to his private house in F-8/2 to be sacrificed.

Insiders say that when Zardari moved into the President’s House, a flock of black partridges were introduced there for their supposedly magical effects.

Unfortunately, the whole flock was electrocuted when a live wire fell on their cage.

A camel, a cow and a few goats kept on the grounds of the presidency, however, survive and provide milk for its worthy resident.

Goat sacrifice reflects poorly on Zardari by RJ Khurana on 28 Jan 2010

The report that Pak President Zardari sacrifices one goat every day to ward off ill-luck shows him up as a superstititious and insecure person who is ill-at-ease with his conscience. Insecurities can drive individuals to sheer madness. Today Zardari is a besieged person. His own Party, the PPP, is unsure of his abilities him to resolve Pakistan's problems, the people in general look at him as one who has fattened himself on commissions on government deals, the Army gives the impression that he is sold out to the Americans in return for huge personal benefita and the Judiciary suspects him as a wheeler dealer. He has just been stripped off of some of his powers that made him powerful. It is a quirk of fate that such persons come to occupy the throne. He will be well-advised to do something good to gain the confidence of his people rather than sacrifice poor helpless (black) goats.

Welldone Mr Zardari by Rahul Shankar on 28 Jan 2010

Zardari one day will get prices for all the lives he has taken. Law of nature will take its course of action when the time comes.

Flaws in your argument by Devasahayam on 29 Jan 2010

War-criminal Pakistan army chiefs Tikka Khan (appointed by Z.A. Bhutto, preceded Zia in that post) and Aslam Beg (bumped-off and succeeded Zia) were not bumped-off (Tikka died natural death, Beg is still breathing); also ex-intel chief Hamid Gul (another 1971 war-criminal, albeit he never set foot in Bangladesh--identified as such by S.M. Ali, founder of Dhaka Star) is still living.

'To ward off evil Prez kills a black goat" by Bhanu on 28 Jan 2010

What should India and Indians sacrifice to ward off evil PERPETRATED against us?

Pakistan vs US by Raj on 28 Jan 2010

In USA the President pardons (saves life) a Turkey on Thanksgiving day. In Pakistan a goat is sacrificed (killed) every day. What a difference ? Humanity vs Cruelty.

Difference rather simple by Devasahayam on 29 Jan 2010

US is democratic-republic, and president is voted in; even if impeached, there is clear line of succession, no danger of a coup. In Pakistan, a civilian kleptocrat president and/or PM must remember that army chief is power-behind-throne--and can always decide he wants throne instead. Ergo, they have to sacrifice the goats as thank-offering for each day that army chief has not bumped them off!

shameful act by Kabir Hathi on 28 Jan 2010

It is such a shame that innocent animals are being slaughtered for unfounded beliefs.A nation is reflected from the way it treats its animals! When head of the state resorts to such insensitive and uncivilized practices what can you expect from a nation?

Try black cat instead by Abhishek Jaipal on 28 Jan 2010

I suggest black cat. He should not rely too much on goats. But nothing to beat self sacrifice.

Ineffective tactic by Devasahayam on 28 Jan 2010

Since the Pakistani wannabe-Putin-clone does not have control over his nation's war-criminal-inculcated terrorist-organisation army--a more likely explanation is that he sacrifices the goat as a "thank offering" for each sunrise he sees as president.
