Kolkata, January 9 What initially began as a missing pistol from a police station soon became the murder weapon in the Visva-Bharati shootout. The repercussions have snowballed into a reshuffle of the officers-in-charge of three police stations by a jittery Kolkata police.

“The reshuffle was routine. As regards the Tollygunge police station, a service pistol went missing, which was later used in the Santiniketan incident. We have initiated disciplinary proceedings against the officers responsible for upkeep of arms and ammunition,” said DC (Headquarters) Vineet Goyal.

Officer-in-Charge of Tollygunge police station Shantipada Roy has been transferred to the Special Branch and Additional Officer-in-Charge Jayanto Chowdhury has been sent to the Reserve Force. Sukumar Chakraborty, officer-in-charge of Lake police station, will join Tollygunge police station. Debasish Baidya, officer-in-charge of Manicktala police station, will join the Lake police station.

Kamal Patra, who was posted at the special branch during the tenure of former police commissioner, will join as the officer-in-charge of Manicktala police station.

The move has led to discontent among a majority of officers who feel that such shake-ups will set a bad precedent.

“A constable lost his pistol and the authorities are shunting out the O-C. This is not right. The O-C cannot possibly check arms issued to each and every officer or constable under him. Moreover, taking advantage of the situation, the top brass is also bringing in people who were previously shunted out,” said an O-C of a police station in the city.
