Suprakash Chakravarty, the DGP responsible for election security and law and order issues related to the polls, said, “During the election period, every one in the force, from a constable to the Director-General is on deputation with the Election Commission. At a time like this, we need to really ask if it is a prudent decision to deploy the manpower for any other activity. I cannot spare any of my manpower for IPL.”
But DGP SS Virk, who took over as the state’s police chief this month but was barred from election-related work by the EC due to his alleged involvement in controversies during elections in Punjab in the past, contradicted his colleague. “As the DG of the state, I report to the state government. If the state Government approves and does take a decision to hold IPL matches, then I will have to make arrangements for the same,” Virk said. “Between Suprakash and me there is proper co-ordination and we will provide every help needed whenever a situation arises. Our common goal is to ensure no law and order situation arises and the force is properly deployed.”
According to Chakravarty, who reports to the Election Commission, the state is waiting to see if the manpower the state police has said it needs for election duty is made available. “(Since) the Centre has already made it clear that no paramilitary force will be deputed for IPL security, we have to wait to hear the election commission’s orders,” Chakravarty said. “IPL is not my baby. My job is to conduct free and fair elections. In the end, I am answerable to the Election Commission and till April 30 the priority is elections.”
When asked if the organisers had approached the state police, Virk replied, “Nothing has been finalised yet. Talks are happening at various levels. We have pointed out that there are certain things that are fine, but certain things need to be reworked.”
Meanwhile, the IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi did not have any clear answer either. “Why don’t you wait for official comment. We already have multiple schedules for multiple possibilities and we are just awaiting for the government’s clearance before releasing it,” he said.

What a shame that an event capable of stimulating economy in this time of global downturn is being offered on a platter to the Britishers. India is brought to abrink by the politics that has permeated each and every aspect of life. Why can't security be provided ? are we at war? we arely having an election, a democratic exercise for which India is still held in high esteem worldwide. It is the politicians that is ruining our otherwise rich country. What a shame???????????????
PLEASE CANCEL THIS MINDLESS TOURNAMENT.
Pay him a hefty sum of money, he will arrange more than required force for you Mr. Lalith Modi. Being in India you don't know their requirements?. All these 'natak' for a few dollars more !!!
IPL can wait period
It is better for the governement to scrap even the talk of IPL till the elections are completed.Mr.Modi is in a different mood.IPL earns crores of money to somebody while more than 80% of our population is below poverty line.No balance of money in our country. Why? The fond of cricket in indian peoples mind is being differently used by IPL and no doubt that every big shot involved in IPL will have his share of money.Further abruptly everybody knows the slums story where people starve for excistence in this country.A cricket tournament earning crores of money, where as 90% of our country men doesnot know how many zero's come for a crore.Amazing.
Prioritization is an important approach to do things. On that count, at the present moment, a free and fair election without any disturbance is the top priority. The IPL is an entertainment and a business activity. Surely we need to go with the priority. The IPL can wait. The matter need not be dragged on. The IPL bosses may be asked to postpone the event. Heavens won’t fall by postponing a cricket event. Let us be honest: how important is cricket for the country’s progress or solving the umpteen problems we have? Then considering that world’s top cricketers will be participating in the IPL, their security is paramount. Any half-hearted approach may cost us heavily. In these troubled times, it would be better to go for the safer options than take risks.
Just shows how much greed has crept into our society , BCCI and IPL commisioner just want to reap in the mega million dollars from IPL without having scant respect for the precious lives of people or having any respect or concern for the security people , Modi should be jailed
Why Mr. Modi is in a hurry as all are aware millions of rupees are involved. Dear Home Minister pleade don't rush and give clearance. Kindly tell them to wait till our General Elections are over as we have to take care all including the foreigners sir. More over why IPL spending unnecessarily as the same can be used for useful purpose for feeding millions of under poverty people in our country.
Feeding poor people is the responsibility of the government and not IPL. The government can feed these poor people from the Rs 91 crore paid by IPL in the form of taxes.
DGP is right, Police should not be used to provide security to a company and its entertainers.
