Mumbai, February 13 Mumbai’s top musclemen like Sameer Dabholkar (RM Bhat Gym), Dasharath Dalvi (Central Railway), Satish Rahate (Maasaheb), Jalinder Aapke (Western Railway), Mangesh Sawant (SGS), Kamlesh Naik (Navy), Ajay Chowkekar (Western Rwailway.) and Vishwanath Gawade (RM Bhat) will vie for the “Mumbai Shree” title on February 16 at the Kokanipada Maidan, Malad (East).

The turnout may be bigger considering the fact that the competition has been deemed a selection trial to select the Mumbai team for the forthcoming Maharashtra Shree competition in Thane on March 8-9.

Though not being considered for the title, the presence of Shyam Rahate, Suhas Khamkar, Sunil Sakpal and Dattakumar Chodankar, the top body builders at the national level will be an added bonus for the lovers of the game.

These four will have to convince the selectors that they are in shape and good enough to represent Mumbai in the state championships. This was revealed by Shankar Kambli, Hon. Secretary of the Mumbai Body Building Association.

The organisers will be conducting weighing in on February 15 at the RM Bhat High School Gymnasium, opposite KEM Hospital, Parel, Mumbai between 4.00 and 7.00 p.m. Body builders who have been national winners are not eligible to participate in the competition according to the organisers.

Rajesh Sawant, the Treasurer of (MBBA) Maharashtra Body Builders Association informed that this will be a path breaking competition for this sport in Mumbai after the state body was officially recognised by the Maharashtra Olympic Association. Sawant said further, “We will be organising a lot of competitions in the districts to begin with in an effort to build a strong foundation for the sport in the state.

The Maharashtra Shree competition to be held next month will carry a top prize of Rs. one lakh to the winner and good money for the rest. This will be for the first time a six figure purse is being awarded to the state champion in the history of the game.
