The lecturers for the seminar were- Dr Anuradha Karkare, counselor of 'Kripa', a rehabilitation centre, Dr Shubhangi Parkar, Head of Department G S Medical College, Mumbai, Dr Shilpa Adorkar, professor, G S Medical College, Mumbai and well-known psychotherapist Dr Superna Telang.
Speaking on the occasion Anuradha Kerkar said, "People use drugs or drink a lot of alcohol to avoid tensions be it pressure from friends, broken families, irresponsible parents, torture by family members and stepparents and so on. What they get in return is nothing but lung cancer, behavioral problems, breathing problems alongside with the permanent depression."
"By utilising infected injections for the intake of drugs thay also are in the danger of getting infected with AIDS. Rave parties are often associated with the use of club drugs such as ecstasy and LSD. Drugs change the way people act and feel. Someone on drugs can have all sorts of mood swings from happy to angry and sad to excited! There can be various reasons why people consume drugs- they either want to get out of depression, boredom or sometimes just to come across as cool and hip," said Shilpa Adorkar, professor, G S Medical college.
According to Dr Shubhangi Parkar, "People start to use drugs and alcohol to make themselves feel better but the fact is that using drugs only ends up making thing worse. It doesn't solve the problem. In fact a consumption that starts as a solution later goes on to ruin their lives by becoming an addiction. One who use drugs becomes dependent on them. This means that the body becomes so accustomed to having this drug that the person can't function well without it. Stopping can cause withdrawal symptoms such as shaking hands, legs, vomiting and sweating. The sick feeling continues until the person's body gets adjusted to being drug-free again and that is a humungous task. So the best solution is- not to go that way!"
The output of the seminar was certainly fruitful as the doctors suggested treatment procedures like detoxification, de-addiction and rehabilitation. To conclude, in the words of Dr Suparna Telang- Youth is the future of the nation. It is their duty to frame the destiny of their motherland. Lets be more responsible. Lets leave drugs. Lets live life."
