Kolkata, April 16 The city reeled under traffic disruptions as political parties rallied against price hike lambasting the UPA government at the Centre.

One of the rallies was taken out by Students Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Rani Rashmoni Road while another was taken out by the Trinamool Congress in the southern fringes of the city on Karl Marx Sarani.

The traffic department of Kolkata police had a tough time controlling the volume of traffic. “We did our best to control traffic. Some of the vehicles had to be diverted. We sent all our men,” said Manoj Verma, DC, traffic.

Major roads like Karl Marx Sarani, APC Road, C R Avenue, S N Banerjee Road, and Jawaharlal Nehru Road were packed with vehicles. Office-goers, schoolchildren and others were seen stranded in the traffic.

Both the rallies were scheduled late in the afternoon, but supporters started pouring in from different parts of the state since morning. Mamata’s rally, which started from near CMRI hospital and ended in Kidderpore, blocked the southern part of the city. The rally ended by 6.30 pm but the traffic jams continued.

“As if inflation was not enough, now we are stranded for an hour in the scorching heat because political parties are protesting against price hike,” said one of the passenger of a private bus at Dorinina crossing .
