Fresh “spring delineators” have been put to ensure that traffic taking a turn on any side is segregated from traffic heading straight, near the Dayal Singh College red light. Spring delineators have also been erected in front of the central verge to reduce the impact of any vehicle crashing into it.
In the accident that claimed Shreya Anand’s life, a truck hit the car she was travelling in, which in turn hit the median towards the India Habitat Centre, increasing the impact.
The Traffic Police is also planning to erect a traffic pedestal at the centre of the intersection. “Since space is limited a roundabout is not possible. But a pedestal of small circumference will help in slowing down traffic,” said a senior traffic police officer. The pedestal is expected to be put in place in a week’s time. The traffic police is also planning to use it as a warning signal for motorists. “We are planning to put up slogans on the pedestal in reflective tape to ensure that motorists can see the intersection from a distance,” added the officer.
Meanwhile, road signs are being re-painted. The trimming of trees for a clearer view of the red light and streetlights, and blinkers, which ensure a better view of the road, are still pending.
The Traffic Police has been mulling over whether to direct the NDMC to put up a speed breaker or not. “We had proposed to the NDMC that it put up a rumbling strip at the intersection. We are waiting for their response,” added the officer.
Two fatal accidents were reported at this junction last year. In the first accident, which happened on January 27, an autorickshaw driver was killed. And the second was the accident that claimed Shreya Anand’s life. On the Lodhi road, between Safdarjung Tomb and Nizammuddin, six people were killed in 2007, while seven died in 2006.
