Kharar, July 25 A Major tragedy was averted even as a speeding Mercedes Benz collided head-on with a Punjab Roadways bus on the Kharar-Mohali “killer stretch” on NH-21 at Desumajra village near Kharar on Friday.

While no loss of life was reported, it was a miraculous escape for 12 persons, including the two car occupants and the bus passengers, who escaped with minor injuries. After colliding with the bus, the car had hit the trees, leaving it badly damaged.

Kharar SHO Dalbeer Singh told Newsline that car owner Manjinder Singh (30), a resident of Balongi village near Mohali, and his friend Vikram Singh (22) of Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib, were rushed to hospital for treatment. Both were reported to be real estate dealers.

The police arrested bus driver Sukhwant Singh, a resident of Baler village in Amritsar, under Sections 279, 337 and 427 of the IPC and later released him on bail. The accident, meanwhile, disrupted vehicular traffic on the national highway until the police removed the bus.
