Shakeel was one of the victims of the kidney racket, allegedly led by Dr Amit Kumar. But the tragedy has had at least one sweet news: it united the 28-year-old with his family. He had left his home, in Ghaziabad, a little over two years ago, following a fight with his father. He lived on the streets near Old Delhi railway station, surviving with odd jobs.

“I never called them,” Shakeel told Newsline.

That was till Saturday morning, when the media published his photo along with his tale. On Saturday, Shakeel’s father Abdullah came looking for him at Gurgaon Civil Hospital. “I will take him back home,” Abdullah told Newsline, “but I don’t know where I’ll get the money for his treatment.” that he never called up family ever since leaving home. “I got news of them from friends and relatives.”
