New Delhi, March 11 Five students of Department of Education, Delhi University, were injured on Monday when a mob attacked their train compartment between Haryana’s Solaka and Rungi railway stations. One of the students, Deenbandhu Diwakar, has been admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where doctors are trying to save one of his eyes which was injured during the attack.

Even though doctors are preparing for a second surgery, they are not sure if they can restore it. Dr DK Sharma, medical superintendent, AIIMS said, “One of the students is still undergoing treatment for eye at RP Centre while the others are in trauma centre.”

Diwakar was part of the 64-member (57 students, seven teachers) study tour that had gone to Bhopal for a week. On their return journey by the Bhopal Express, many passengers started entering the compartment after the status of the train changed to local train. According to Ashish Ranjan, a teacher, they shared their reserved berths but trouble started when more people started entering the bogey.

“We refused to allow people to sit with our girl students and this made the crowd furious. They started beating some of the boys with belts but our the students managed to push them to another bogey,” said Ranjan. Someone from the crowd then pulled the chain and stopped the train. Then the mob went outside the train and started pelting stones. Someone even threw kerosene, he added

The hour-long ordeal got over only after the students called their relatives in Delhi who contacted the Haryana Police, said Farah, a student. A complaint against the mob is registered at Faridabad.
