The president of the Maharashtra Unit of the NSUI, Satyen Das met DRM D K Jain and exhorted him to take some decision in this regard, describing Guwahati as having become a regional hub of the entire North East region and stressed that a train between the two regions may help foster business potential between the two states. The memorandum refers to the problems faced by approximately 12,000 North Eastern students who are currently residing in Pune and its surrounding areas, due to the non-availability of a direct railway communication between Pune and Guwahati. They have to travel via Howrah or Kalyan and Mumbai which is 'a very inconvenient and time-consuming exercise'.
The NSUI representatives said that various working bachelors and the business community from the North East approached the NSUI complaining that they are facing similar problems.
The president of the North East Students' Association of Pune, Chongphe Angh also submitted a request to this effect. When contacted, Jain said that his office has received requests for introducing new trains every fortnight and explained that he would be forwarding their request to the headquarters in Mumbai and the ultimate autority would lie with the Railway Board in New Delhi.
"If they feel that the need is genuine, then some surveys regarding the number of North East commuters will be carried out," said Jain.
