Kolkata, June 17 Police had to fire two rounds in air to disperse a violent group of students at the Ranaghat Railway Station in Nadia district on Tuesday. The mob damaged compartments of three trains. Eight GRP and RPF personnel were injured in the brickbatting resorted to by the mob. No arrests have been made so far.

Superintendent of Railway Police (Sealdah), Barun Mullick said the incident occured after the suspension of train services at afternoon due to the snapping of an overhead electrical cable. “The Shantipur local was carrying hundreds of students, who were on their way to appear for the English exam at several local colleges. When they found they couldn’t get to their exam centres on time, they got furious,” said Mullick. Nearly 1,500 students vandalised trains stuck on the platforms due to the power failure, said the police.
