This is the second incident in the last few days where a tribal girl was sexually assaulted. On February 27, a 13-year-old tribal girl was raped by her teacher, also a tribal, at the Ashram school in Khanda village in neighbouring Dharmapur taluka. The school authorities suspended Suresh Gamit, the accused teacher, after principal Chuni Mahala lodged a complaint with the Dharampur police.
The police said that in the Luhari village rape case, Naresh Manda accosted the girl, 17, while she was returning home after completing her work in the nearby fields. Manda waylaid her to the forests near the village entrance for some work and raped her there. Later later threatened to kill her if she disclosed it to anybody.
The girl returned home late in the night and upon inquiry by her parents, broke down and disclosed the entire incident to her mother. The girl’s father then contacted Silvasssa Police and lodged a complaint against the accused.
Acting on the complaint, the police arrested Manda from his house on Friday. The girl and the accused youth were later sent to the Vinoba Bhave Hospital in Silvassa for medical check-up where doctors confirmed that she was raped.
Silvassa police inspector R K Gavit, however, said, the girl could be a major and they have now requested the doctors for her age verification. “After primary investigations, we have found that the boy was in a one-sided love with the girl and he had not disclosed it to the girl. We suspect that the girl might have rejected his proposal when he took her to the forest. He might have lost control over his feelings and raped her,” he added.
