The retired Judge of the Lahore High Court said he had refused the offer by the Pakistan Cricket Board when it first approached him, but the Board kept insisting and eventually announced his name as head of the panel on television after which he had not choice but to accept the responsibility.
"I told them I regret I can't accept this responsibility because I am not into cricket. But they kept on coming back about the positive role I could play with my background and so I left it up to them to decide," Aftab told Geo News
"I then saw on television the announcement off my appointment. And since I am not one to run away from responsibility I accepted it and am doing my job," he said. The three-member appellate tribunal earlier this month suspended the five-year ban on Shoaib for a month to allow him to play in the Indian Premier League.
The tribunal said that since the disciplinary committee of the Board had also not stopped him from playing abroad while imposing the ban it would be unjustified to not clear him to play in the IPL.
The IPL governing body had twice refused to allow Shoaib to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders team till he was under the ban.
Shoaib who made a cracking debut in the IPL this week has already filed an appeal against the ban, which would be heard from June 4.
Aftab also made it clear that he would have no problems if the Board or authorities decided to change the tribunal because of the appointment of one of the member's, Salman Taseer as Governor of Punjab.
"If they want to change it I have no issues with this. If they want me to continue I will do it. We have left it up to Taseer to decide if he wants to continue on the tribunal after his new responsibility or relinquish it," he said.
"But even if Taseer steps down the Board and authorities will decide on a new appointment. And this is not unusual because even in the High Court, judges are replaced in the middle of a trial if one judge from a bench retires or whatever," he said.
