Vadodara, January 25 A Chicken vendor in the city's Fatehpur locality started selling tri-coloured chicks on Friday, a day ahead of the Republic Day, with an aim to attract people. Sale of chicken has gone down following the outbreak of bird-flu in West Bengal.

Iqbalbhai and several other chicken vendors in the area started selling colourful chicks coated with edible dyes for a mere Rs 3, after learning that several farms in the country had been sanitised and the demand for chicken had gone down as a result of the bird-flu scare.

While animal lovers in the city have expressed their outrage over the colouring of the chicks, chicken vendors say the colouring agents are the same that are used for colouring sweetmeats.

They also assured the people that these chicks came from safe poultry farms outside the city area.

Vendors in Fatehpura said that people generally bought these chicks for decoration rather than for consumption, as the brightly coloured birds were a big hit with the children. Meanwhile, most of the city restaurants have not yet removed chicken off the menu, as there have been no confirmed reports of the spread of bird-flu in western India.
