Kolkata As the Congress in West Bengal today threatened to intensify its agitation over the proposed renaming of Indira Bhavan at Salt Lake, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee alleged the Congress was colluding with the CPI(M) to attack her party.

“In West Bengal, the CPI(M) and the Congress are working together. Our partymen are being attacked at places like Keshpur and Garbeta,” Banerjee said while reacting to protest-agitations by Congress workers over the Indira Bhavan issue.

The government has proposed to rename Indira Bhavan, where late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi stayed during the 1972 AICC session and hence the name, after rebel poet Kavi Nazrul Islam.

Banerjee, the state's chief minister, alleged Congress cadres were carrying out a campaign of vilification.

“Some men of the Congress are carrying out campaign on the Indira Bhavan issue. They (Congress) are blocking roads and railway tracks daily and abusing me daily. But I have not uttered anything against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh or against Sonia Gandhi,” she said.

Banerjee pointed out the building was a state guesthouse where the late Marxist leader Jyoti Basu had stayed for more than a decade till his death.

Congressmen are now agitating, but was silent when the house was used as a CPI(M) party office when Jyoti Basu stayed there, she reminded Congress, Trinamool's ally in the government.

Her party was “respectful” to Indira Gandhi and the Trinamool Congress-led Kolkata Municipal Corporation had erected the former Prime Minister's statue at a prominent place in the metropolis, she said.

“After the CPI(M) returned the building to the government following Jyoti Basu's death, six government departments wanted to use it. But we said a Nazrul academy would be set up instead,” she said.

She said it would house a museum on the poet and a Indo-Bangla Friendship Foundation.

“Nazrul left India for Bangladesh because he did not get his due recognition here. This is our shame. I think this academy would strengthen the friendship between India and Bangladesh.”

West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Pradip Bhattacharya said the Indira Bhavan issue involved sentiments of party's workers.

Bhattacharya was speaking during an agitation staged by the Youth Congress, led by party MP Mausam Noor, near Birla Planetarium in south Kolkata.

He, however, expressed hope the Mamata Banerjee government would desist from the move to rename the Indira Bhavan, saying, “If this is not done, we shall intensify our agitation statewide.”

He said mere assurance by Mamata Banerjee not to go ahead with renaming the Bhavan would not do; the Congress wanted a 'written' assurance.

Not colluding with CPM at all: Congress

Congress today denied West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's charge that it was colluding with CPI(M) to attack her government on the issue of rechristening a house in Kolkata named after Indira Gandhi.

“I do not understand the context of that question where the Bengal CM is saying the Congress and the Left are working in tandem. Congress is in alliance with Trinamool in West Bengal. Trinamool is an ally of UPA in Delhi,” Congress spokesman Manish Tewari told mediapersons here.

“However, it is correct that in past because of the congruence of views on secularism, the Left was with UPA-I. I do not know in what context, circumstances and perspective the statement was made by the West Bengal chief minister,” he said.

Tewari also reminded Banerjee that Indira Gandhi was also once her leader.

Congress' reaction came after Banerjee's accusation that the party's state unit was colluding with CPI(M) to attack her on the move to to rename Indira Bhavan, where late prime Minister Indira Gandhi had stayed during the 1972 AICC session.

Tewari said: “We have great respect for artistes and musicians but it is also important to keep in mind that late Indira Gandhi was not only a very respectable leader of the nation but at the time had also been the leader of the present West Bengal chief minister.”

MAMATA......... by msbhaikatti LATUR MS on 06 Jan 2012

West Bengal has a long history of maverick Congress leaders including Subhas Chandra Bose, leaders who created Bengal plank that marched to a slightly different tune than the High Command. Mamata Banerjee is just the latest in that long line. But she is the most successful because she managed to come out of the Congress and then make the mother party dance to her tune.

Indira Bhavan by Basheshar on 03 Jan 2012

Madam Mamtaji. Don't insult Bharat mata with gimmicks like including names of Nazrul Islam in place of Indira Bhavan. Learn something from history. You may put this poet's name, if you love him so much' to another place. thanks

There is just no need to name a building after Indira Gandhi just because she slept there. Will somebody tell these politicians not to waste the nation's money and time quarelling over things that have no bearing on the day to day life of the country where every issue is more important. Diverting the minds of the people away from their miseries seems to have become a specialty for all politicians and the media revels in such useless issues.
