Kolkata, August 13 A resident of Tangra, whose sister committed suicide on Tuesday night, assaulted Trinamool Congress leader Paresh Paul after he declined to provide her help.

Papiya Chatterjee and her brother Sourav found the body of Priyanka (16) hanging from the ceiling fan of her bedroom on Wednesday morning.

Fearing police hassles, they rushed to Paul’s Kankurgachi residence where the TMC leader asked them to approach the police. But in a fit of rage, Papiya attacked Paul, who received minor injuries.

While Saurav was caught by local residents and handed over to the police, Papiya fled from the spot.

However, considering her state of mind, Paul did not lodge a police complaint.

“It was an emotional shock for her, therefore, she reacted violently and attacked me. I hold no grudge against her and do not want to lodge a complaint. I tried to help them but also told them to go to the police first,” said Paul.

According to the police, the family has a history of mental illness and Priyanka was suffering from depression for some time.

“Paul did not want to press charges so we did not initiate a case against Papiya. We also informed the Tangra police station about the suicide. The girl’s body was later recovered from her bedroom,” said Nimroz Ahmed, Officer in-Charge, Phulbagan police station.
