“This is my first trip to India. We just had fun,” said the pianist James, who enjoyed his Mumbai show before flying down to the Capital. But Klugh and Austin were not alien to Indian audience. The guitarist Klugh, who performed three years ago in Mumbai, was delighted to strum some more magic to jazz enthusiasts across cities. “Since my last show in India, I’ve seen an increase in the number of people who appreciate jazz,” he said. He has just finished his latest album The Spice of Life. “It’s not a great title but the compositions are certainly so,” smiled Klugh, who won a Grammy along with James for their album One on One in 1981.
While Klugh has worked with the likes of George Benson and Chick Corea, Austin has collaborated with Michael Jackson and Luther Vandross, and James has just completed a project that fuses Chinese music into a sound of his own. “The experimentation is unique for me since this is the first time I’m incorporating a Chinese sound into jazz. And although I knew a little about Indian music through Ravi Shankar and I like the sound of the sitar and the tabla, I would like to experiment with the Indian sound once I come across something special,” said James. We like fusion too.
