Chandigarh, January 22 Ahead of the visit of French President Nicholas Sarkozy as the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations, various Sikh organisations are gearing up to hold protests against the French government’s decision to disallow wearing of turban in schools.

On January 24, a peaceful protest march will begin from the Sector 34 gurdwara to Alliance Francaise in Sector 36 here.

Lt General Kartar Singh Gill of the International Sikh Confederation, Gurpreet Singh, Director of United Sikh, Ashok Singh Bagaria, president of Institute of Sikh Studies, and M S Rahi of the Sikh Legal Foundation said this while addressing newspersons today.

Gurpeet Singh said, “We spoke to the SGPC president, who said they will take up the matter through the SGPC or the SAD. But it’s not a party matter. It’s frustrating that political affiliations are coming in the way.”

Sikh scholars also rapped the stand of the BJP of not raising the turban issue during the proposed visit of the French President. “The ban is an infringement on our human rights and our right to follow our religion,” they said.
