Vienna, June 21: A few scuffles between supporters resulting in minor injuries were reported in Vienna's fan mile, as emotions ran high during Turkey's stunning Euro 2008 quarter-final win over Croatia on penalties.

Some Croatian fans suffered cuts and bleeding noses after Turkish supporters attacked them on Friday in a remote area of the city-centre fan zone, and had to be taken into the nearby VIP area to be given first aid.

Another similar incident elsewhere in the 100,000-square-metre fan mile only ended after security personnel and the police intervened.

Both incidents occurred before the end of the game and the mood quickly calmed down when Turkey won on penalties.

Emergency services reported a few more minor scuffles, resulting in light injuries, but said there was nothing serious.

Police did not say if there had been any arrests. Meanwhile, bottles flew between Turkish and Croatian fans in an outer district of the capital, which has a strong Turkish and Croatian population.

Several hundred disappointed Croatian fans attacked celebrating Turks in a nearby street, throwing bottles at them, while stones were also thrown at windows bearing Turkish flags.

After police intervened, closing the street, the Croatian supporters turned against the officers, pelting them with bottles and other items.

An improvised parade on a major Vienna boulevard proceeded peacefully however, if not quietly.
