A Dish from the Middle East, falafel is a crispy fried ball or a pattice made of spiced fava beans or chickpea. The word is coined from the Arabic word filfil which means pepper.
Falafel has been part of the diet of Mizrahi Jews for centuries and is a staple of the Israeli diet. Generally this fast-food dish is wrapped in a roll pita bread and is commonly known as sandwich outside the Middle East. During Ramadan, falafel is sometimes eaten as a part of an iftar, the meal which breaks the daily sunset fast. While one can use low-fat curd, cloves and chopped spring onions for the dressing, the stuffing for the pattice has chickpea, chopped green chilli, grated cabbage, carrot and roasted cumin powder.
