Chandigarh, February 1 To connect the planned institutional area at Sarangpur village with Chandigarh, the city administration plans to widen the existing road. The Madhya Marg will be extended from the PU-PGI to the village.

According to the plans of the Engineering and the Architecture department, the road will comprise a 3-lane dual carriageway and a 16-feet slow carriageway with 10-feet side berms. An 8-feet cycle track is also being contemplated, the feasibility of which is under study at the moment.

The length of the road will be around 4 kilometers. The PGI-PU side of the road will be built first.

The administration is also planning another 3-lane dual carriageway to link the village from Dakshin Marg via Dadu Majra and Mullanpur village.

The two roads, when completed, will make the institutional area accessible from the two ends of the city.

“At present, work on all big projects — the Theme and Amusement Park, Education City and Film City — is in progress. We want to finish the road before any of these projects are over,” said S K Jaitley, Chief Engineer, UT.

Though no deadline has been fixed for the road, officials said work on the narrow bridge near Khuda Lahora and portion of the road through the existing village market, will the longest.

“Deadline for all internal roads in the institutional area is June. We hope to complete this 3-lane carriageway at the earliest,” added Jaitley.
