Mumbai Activist files case against ‘Padmashri’ actor; cops look for law to book him and organisers

Actor Akshay Kumar’s stunt at the recent Lakme Fashion Week, where his wife Twinke Khanna unbuttoned the top button of his jeans, has landed the police in a fix.

The Vakola police on Wednesday received a complaint, demanding action against the actor’s stunt that it termed as “offensive”. The police are now considering whether or not the ‘unbuttoning’ act warrants booking of the actor and the organisers for obscenity.

Kumar, who walked the ramp to promote Levi’s ‘unbuttoned’ line of jeans, had walked up to his wife Twinkle and had top button of his jeans opened by her. Social worker Anil Nair has filed the complaint, in which he claimed to have been ‘offended’ by Kumar’s act.

The police are looking into the matter and are checking what section to apply in the case, or whether a case can be filed at all. “We have received a complaint from Nair who claims to be a social worker,” said Senior Police Inspector S G Nekalikar of the Vakola police.

“Nair seems to have been offended by the incident. At present, we are investigating whether a case can be filed in this matter or not. After preliminary inquiry, we will see whom we can file the case against,” said Nekalikar.

When contacted for his response to the complaint, Kumar said, “If I have hurt anyone’s sentiments with my actions, I’m sorry because I didn’t mean to.”

Anil Chopra, head of the Lakme Fashion Week, said, “I haven’t heard of anything like this. I can’t say anything till I get an official word on it. It’s merely speculation for now.”

Nair claims to be a social activist who has worked with Lok Adhikar and several other organisations working in the anti-smoking arena and in alleviating poverty. Nair admitted that he is part of a political party, but refused to reveal the name of the party as elections are around the corner. “It’s not that I am against fashion, Lakme Fashion Week or Akshay Kumar as a person. I think that if we are progressing then we should progress in fashion as well. But what Akshay Kumar did was not really necessary,” Nair said.

Elaborating on his stand, Nair said, “Akshay Kumar is a brand himself. If he wears any jeans at a fashion show, he will immediately be emulated whether his wife opens the buttons of his jeans or not. Seeing that he is a Padmashri (awardee) and a role model, he should not have done this. There were so many other actors over there and none of them did anything of this sort.”

What a disgrace by Akshay on 13 Apr 2009

So is this what the "social workers" of our country are busy doing? Being glued to the tele during the Fashion week in wait of a wardrobe malfunction? Sadly as there were none this time around they decided to take it out on the actor and his 'antics'. So while people on the streets of India are busy whipping out their weener in public and taking a piss where ever the hell they want to, out great social workers are busy being caught with their pants down!I am in no way saying that what the actor did was right, but instead of focusing on something so trivial try and use your time and effort in correcting what needs to be rectified on a priority basis. There is enough wrong with India already! Do we really need to find more faults?

Why to bother by akshaya on 11 Apr 2009

So many serious things are unbuttoned in Public, why such a hue and cry for a single button being unbuttoned. 'Yeh to bada toeing he' is much much worse

unbuttoning by rammohan on 05 Apr 2009

She can unbutton his pants or unzip his pants at the privacy fo their bed room. Doing it in public, stinks. Or they may not be finding time at home to do all that.

The curious case of Akshay Kumar's button by faisal on 04 Apr 2009

Actually i am a great fan of hritik roshan but i have sympathy with Akshay Kumar that it is wrong to say that akshay kumar has done any wrong thing becauce it was just an act of unbuttoning the jeans button and not the whole jeans which is not an act of any issue as it is an unbuttoning jeans only and the peoples who are against him just want publicity by raising this stupid issue.
