According to the police, Jaswant Singh and Surendra Singh wanted to revive militancy in Punjab and they intended to do so by killing a few prominent religious leaders in Jalandhar. The militants were arrested from Jalandhar. Two firearms of a Pakistani make were recovered from them, arousing suspicions that Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence was helping them create severe unrest in India.
"The suspects arrested are part of a group of terrorists, four of whom we arrested in Delhi last year. They were looking to target four popular religious leaders," said Alok Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell).
According to an officer, Jaswant and Surendra had all their plans in place when they were arrested. Prior to their arrests, they had been absconding for over two months. "They had been monitoring the daily routine of a religious leader and made a detailed itinerary of where he goes and at what time. Fortunately, we thwarted the attempt in December last year by arresting four of their associates in Delhi. However, the threat persisted since these two were on the run," said an officer.
The militants revealed under intense interrogation that they had links to the ISI and BKI, both of which have made substantial bases in Punjab and are setting up infrastructure to spread large-scale terror in the state.
"Jaswant has taken proper training in using firearms. He took these lessons in some jungles. We have shared all this information with the Punjab Police," said the officer.
From their interrogation, the police have gained vital information about BKI. The militants revealed that BKI's new chief Wadhwa Singh lives in Pakistan and is being assisted by his son-in-law, Satnam Singh, who operates out of Germany. "They have a network of associates based in the US and the UK. In fact, Jaswant and Surendra told us they had asked for an AK-47 rifle to execute their plans in Punjab," said the police.
