Judge Vilas-Patil convicted Ramesh Namdeo Undhre (25) and Namdeo Sopan Undhre (60), both residents of Kalewadi under Loni Kalbhor police station, for murdering Rajendra Tukaram Undhre and for attempting to destroy evidence. The judge also issued a non-bailable warrant against Gangadhar Namdeo Undhre (27), who was not present in court.
The case dates back to March 3, 2006 when Rajendra’s family was unable to find any trace of him. His father Tukaram Sopan Undhre (60), a resident of Kalewadi, sent his other sons Sunil and Popat Shivaji Undhre to search him. Incidentally Rajendra had been spotted quarelling with the accused a day before he went missing. After a day of intensive search, the deceased’s brothers found the accused watering their fields. However, Rajendra was not with them.
The brothers saw a trail of blood leading from the accused’s fields to the fields beyond and accordingly filed a missing persons complaint at the Lonikalbhor police station. A police investigation found Rajendra’s body in a pit covered by sugarcane stalks. He had been hit on the head with a sharp object and had bled to death. Further investigation revealed that the accused and the deceased had been fighting over the demarcation of the land and their houses.
The property tussle had culminated in Rajendra’s death and the accused were produced in court, where they were granted bail. Additional public prosecutor Nilima Vartak, who was arguing the case on behalf of the State, had examined 14 witnesses, none of whom turned hostile.
