Mumbai, February 6 Two police officers were suspended for dereliction of duty in connection with the Sunday’s incident in Dadar where activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) allegedly pelted a taxi with stones, broke its windscreen and assaulted the driver. Additional Commissioner of Police (Central Region) Rajnish Seth said that an internal inquiry has also been initiated against other officers, including an ACP.

The two suspended police officers—Inspector Motiram Kadam and Sub-Inspector Deepak Pawar—are both attached to the Shivaji Park police station. “They were present when a crowd had gathered on Sunday afternoon and attacked the taxi. The officers did not take any action against despite being present at the spot at the time of the offence,” said Seth.

Seth added: “We are also conducting an internal inquiry against some other officers, including Assistant Commissioner of Police Balkrishna Bhange of the Dadar division under whose jurisdiction the incident took place. If these officers are found to be responsible for lapses, action will be taken against them.”

According to the police, 270 persons have been arrested since Sunday for causing unrest—of these 143 are MNS workers and 90 are Samajwadi Party activists.

“There were no incidents of violence anywhere in the city on Wednesday. However, in the afternoon, six to seven men with their faces covered entered Sharma Textiles showroom in Matunga (East). They took out some cloth and threw it on the road before running away. But they didn’t damage the shop or assault anybody. No shops in the area were asked to close down,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K L Prasad.

Asked if the Centre had sought a report of the situation, Prasad said: “Whenever such situations arise, the PMO normally seeks information from the state. Thou-gh, I am not in a position to say whether the Centre has sought a report from the state, we have submitted our report to the state government.”
