Ludhiana, January 16 Eminent economist and former vice-chancellor of Punjabi University Dr SS Johl said that the legendary artist Sobha Singh painted bright and good aspects of the religious, historical, social and cultural life of Punjab.

Dr Johl was presiding over a function at Ramgarhia Girls College here today, after releasing the prints of the artist’s paintings of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh,

Dr Johl added that Sobha Singh had spent most of life time in painting Sikh history, and bright aspects of Punjabi life. He regretted that neither the government nor any other organization extended him any assistance to maintain his art gallery at Andretta village in Kangra valley during his life, or to his daughter after his death.

Dr Johl maintained that the artist, and thereafter his daughter and her family, never compromised their principles to seek favours or any benefit from the authorities. He added that it will be a great tribute to the late artist if any organization lends assistance to his daughter’s family to maintain his art gallery, and his valuable paintings.

He recalled that during his vice-chancellorship of Punjabi University, D.Lit degrees were conferred on Sobha Singh and Mother Teresa, in recognition of their services to the respective field.

Welcoming the chief guest and the distinguished gathering, Ranjodh Singh, president of the managing committee of the college, recalled his association with the artist and his family. Bibi Gurcharan Kaur, the daughter of the artist, was honoured on the occasion.

Prominent among those attended the function were photo-artist TPS Sandhu, Dr JS Dhiman and Prof Gurbhajan Gill of PAU, journalist Harbir Singh Bhanwer, Parduman Singh Bedi, Dr Ranjit Singh, Dr Maan Singh, Kanwaljit Singh Shanker, the principal and staff of the college.
