Agra, October 13: The lifeless body of two-year-old Sonu was on Monday pulled out by rescue workers, four days after he fell into a 150-ft deep borewell that was carelessly left uncovered allegedly by district authorities in Shamsabad town in Agra.

Army and paramilitary personnel had joined locals in digging a parallel tunnel soon after the incident on Thursday in Lehrakapura village but the rescue work was hampered by frequent mudslides due to the soggy nature of the soil as the site was located near a pond.

"He is no more," S N Medical College Principal N C Prajapati said after the boy was examined at the district hospital. The body has been sent for post mortem.

The child was stuck in the borewell at the depth of about 70-ft for the last 98 hours. No movement had been noticed or any sound heard from him two hours after he fell into the well, rescue workers said.

The district administration has already ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. It has also suspended two officials of the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam for negligence as they had allegedly left the borewell uncovered.

This is the second such incident in the district in four months. A two-year-old girl Vandana had fallen into a bore well and was rescued after over 26 hours of efforts.

In 2006, a kid named Prince had fallen into a borewell and was rescued after two days of tremendous efforts by army and district authorities in Kurukshetra in Haryana.

Sonu's family will be given Rs one lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, District Magistrate Anil Kumar said.

The grieving family blamed the authorities for the death of the boy. The child's father Pappu accused the officials of mishandling the rescue operation.

The inconsolable mother refused to speak to anyone.

sonu case of borewell by kiran on 18 Oct 2008

accountability by vishal on 14 Oct 2008

Letme tell you how to stop these kind of things from happening - Choice 1 : The court throws the officials whose negligence caused this in jail for 20 years citing "death of a minor due to negligence" choice 2 : the public grabs hold of the officials and stomp the life out of them. Next time when a borewell is dug, the officials incharge of that particular borewell will be out at 10 in the night to inspect that the hole is properly covered. It is human nature of relax and let things fly unless they are afraid of the consequences. Make them afraid of the consequences. Things will automatically change. Let them go scot free and 6 months later you will be writing another sorry comment for some other Munnu losing his life to these borewells.

Sonu's death by Sunil Sahasrabudhe on 14 Oct 2008

There are no words to describe sonu's parents mental condition. But then this thing was waiting to happen when careless authorities and equally careless parents are out there. It's unfortunate that a child lost his life for no fault of him. My sympathies with every parent who have lost their child or children. May sonu's soul rest in peace.

Sonu by Abraham on 14 Oct 2008

So sad of Sonu a little one lost life because of someone else negligence. I can't imagine how the little one would have battled for life in that pit 70ft below. We as indians do not have a basic habit of safety. We find pits dug up by telephone dept., municpal corporation and all others who are eligible to dig and leave the open pit for someone to die. We need to act fast file a PIL (public interest litigation) aganist this and punish them for what the do.

How many more deaths are they going to wait for? by Suchitra Poduval on 13 Oct 2008

How many more deaths of young innocent victims are they going to wait for? Why isn't there a system in place? And why a system, don't they have any common sense or sense of humanity even? That a borewell left open is a sheer invitation for death and only for little kids?? All they need to so is close it up!! The engineers who are in charge of such operations ought to be hanged, not just suspended, because they are too shameless to be affected by just a suspension. Madam, Mayawati, wake up!!

those calling parents irresponsible by pranav singh on 13 Oct 2008

Has anyone even seen the poor laborers toiling out like cattle to earn a decent meal. They can't be vigilant of their kids all the time. Unless smart Alecs on this forum sponsor them a baby sitter. It is the duty of their employer to provide safe working conditions. Leaving borewell uncovered has no excuse and the irresponsible employers must be held responsible.

Can the parents be more responsible ? by Vivek on 13 Oct 2008

What were the parents of the child doing and where were they when the incident happened ??How about the parents be more responsible and watch where their two year old is running about.Definitely the people that left the borewell uncovered must take a part of the blame but so must the parents of the child. With such carelessness if it wasn't a borewell that caused the mishap, it would have been something else like a moving vehicle.

Parents by miithaa on 16 Oct 2008

Exactly, I totally agree with that. Parents are equally responsible for this. Atleast the mother could have been more responsible when they know that a borewell had been dug and left opened. Does the 2 yr old child know to be responsible? Okay, next is the residents of the local area, why are we waiting for the reponsible people here? why won't we take the initiative to close the borewell atleast temporarily? I can understand his parents state of mind now and i feel sorry for blaming them for what has happened but this is the fact.

Bore-well death/deaths by To on 13 Oct 2008

Well, using words to describe the mental state of parents after the loss of their child is not something easy and hard to understand. What I dont understand is where were the parents when the child was left unattended to, which world were they in? Was it not their fault to leave a 2 year old to his wish? Nevertheless the authorities have been irresponsible by leaving the dug-out open, an easy invitation to death! Not just the authorities but the parents need to be punished too.

Atrocious by Ram on 13 Oct 2008

It is so disheartening to hear this terrible news. Those people responsible should be hanged for this gross negligence. Politicians, arise, awake, come out and work towards the betterment of the people, not betterment of yourself and your family. May Sonu's sould rest in peace.

Lesson from the mistakes by Selva on 13 Oct 2008

The same type of incident is happening again and again and it doesn't seem that the concerned authorities are taking any action against the perpetrators of such a crime. They should be punished severely in such a way so that everyone should be conscious about their duty.

Suggestion by Sanjay Raj on 13 Oct 2008

But the main fault is of his parents. Even they know that the place where they are working is dangerous, they don't care about their children and let them play alone aside. Then what can the government can do. My only suggestion is "Its is better to be safe then being worried after such situations".

sonu by bipin on 13 Oct 2008

its a disgrace that a life is lost due to utter negligence of the authority involved. severely punish the guilty party and the jal nigam. it is common place to see the holes, borewells, pot holes open on the main roads and in the vilages by the water, electricity, cable and other services. they do not value the life until one of their own goes down the drain. my heart goes out to the family of sonu. may sonu's soul rest in peace.

Two year old Sonu brought out dead from borewel by govinda on 13 Oct 2008

It is a very sad news. I request to Govt please take a hard action who are the rwsponsible for this. Govt should announce hard moneytary penalty to the accused and give minimun Rs.500000.00 to Sonu's parent. Govt should carefull for the future.

sonu by asif khan on 13 Oct 2008

The sonu is not the last person, there are millions and million corrupt officials and corrupt contractors who are and will be playing with the life of these teens specially with the poor ppeople's kids and shameless official as usual will declare the componsation of one lakh or so and will be feeling proud by thinking they not only serve the nation by helping the victims financially. shame on them

The employees should be tried for "willful negligence" by Shiva Gopalakrishnan on 13 Oct 2008

the employees should be tried for willful Negligence only then will it be a lesson for the others.

Sonu by Ramesh on 13 Oct 2008

The officials who are responsible for this accident must be charged with murder and should be punished accordingly. And the Government must pay atleast 10lakhs to the grieving family, and it should be considered that its an accident occured because of pure negligence.

National Shame by Ali on 13 Oct 2008

This is a National shame. There is no cost of Human value. We keep on fighting on communal and caste lines. And the unsung will die such deaths. Politicians divide people for this very reason so that issues such as these pertaining to infrastructure are relegated to the background. This is what we call India shining?

take them to court by naveen on 13 Oct 2008

y cant they take irresponsible persons to court who fail to cover the borewell.

Two-year-old Sonu brought out dead from borewe by Prem on 13 Oct 2008

What a shame for the government to announce Rs. one lakh as compensation to the family of Sonu. This is too little a punishment for the government for the follies of its employees. The government must own the entire blame and compensate the parents of the child reasonably. It is immaterial as what the government may do with its careless and foolish employees.

Sonu by Subham on 13 Oct 2008

This is unfornutate to declare that any project in our country is not processed through Risk Management and even if it is, no one really cares for the poor - and Sonu is an example. When can we learn this education of care am not sure. My heartfelt condolence to the family - a little child could not be saved - a little child who could have been tomorrow's pride.

Shame on us by Chirantan on 13 Oct 2008

Its a matter of shame for all of us.This isn't the first time that such an incident has happened and yet we fail to do anything about it.The first thing we can start with is to take the responsible "head of the department" and giving him imprisonment making this an example for all the govt clerks and officials to not to take their work so lightly.

Very Bad by chopra on 13 Oct 2008

yes, you are right.

Sonu by sumasushil on 13 Oct 2008

Shame on authorities who left the hole open carelessly and shame on parents who left the child unattended. Whatever could be the reasons for the authorities and the parents to have done what they did, it was very wrong of them to have been negligent.Authorities should be charged with murder case and punished accordingly. Care should be taken to see this incident does not repeat. Parents should be tried and given counselling for how they can keep their children safe in any kind of work environment they are forced to work in.This heart wrenching incident, I hope is the last such thing I hear in my lifetime! May God rest little Sonu's soul in peace!
