UGC hikes scholarships for research fellows

Lucknow, March 6 In its bid to promote research work in universities, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has raised the scholarships of Junior Research Fellow (JRF), Senior Research Fellow (SRF) by Rs 2,000 to 4,000.

From next month, JRFs, SRFs of science, humanities and social sciences courses will be entitled for the increased scholarship.

“We have informed the registrar of all the universities about the revised rate of fellowship to JRF/SRF/RA that will come into effect from April 1,” said AK Dogra, joint secretary, selection award, UGC.

As per the revised rates, the JRF in science, humanities and social sciences who used to get Rs 10,000 per month will now receive Rs 12,000 per month. The Senior Research Fellowship in science, humanities and social sciences has been raised from Rs 12,000 to Rs 14,000. The maximum raise of Rs 4,000 will be availed by JRFs in engineering and technology.

“Earlier, the fellowship given to a JRF in engineering and technology stream was Rs 10,000 per month. Now, it has been raised to Rs 14,000,” said a senior UGC official.

The fellowship for foreign research scholars has also been enhanced. “Junior Research Fellowship for foreign national has been increased to Rs 12,000 from Rs 10,000 monthly. Likewise, against the monthly fellowship of Rs 12,000, the foreign SFRs will now get Rs 14,000,” said UGC officials.

Meanwhile, the Lucknow University has already started making arrangements to provide the scholarships as per the new rates. “We had a meeting with our finance department officials. To grant new scholarships we have made all the arrangements,” said LU pro vice-chancellor Prof Radhey Shyam Yadav.
