Mumbai, January 17 The University Institute of Chemical Technology (UICT) as part of its platinum jubilee celebrations is organising a 10-day festival for science and engineering institutes across the country titled “YouthFest 08”. The various technical events are designed to channel the technical knowledge of the best young minds in the country and to provide a common platform to present their ideas and innovations.

“All the events of the institute have been clubbed together for the first time to mark our platinum jubilee celebrations,” said Divya Menon, general secretary (Technological Association), UICT. The event commenced with UICT’s annual day on Thursday and was inaugurated by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Jairaj Phatak and Goa University Vice-Chancellor Dileep Deobagkar.

While technical events are scheduled from January 18-23, the cultural events will be conducted from January 24-27. While Prodigy, the chemical engineering talent hunt, will test students' skills in15 technical and non-technical events, Rangotsav will be the third national symposium cum paper and poster presentation competition. This year the symposium will provide a platform for the presentation of new research and development concepts and ideas, theories and results which reflect the changing image and place of modern paints, polymer science and technology.

Further, the “Young Innovators’ Choice Competition” (YICC) will offer an opportunity for undergraduate students to solve real-life technical problems related to chemical industry in a stipulated time period. The team will select a problem and will get 72 hours to come up with a paper solution. Similarly, the “Young Researchers’ Conference” will enable master’s and PhD students to showcase their research work. “Research work pertaining to various streams like basic sciences, biotechnology, chemical (biochemical and petrochemical) engineering, chemical technology, pharmaceutical sciences and technology will be presented," said Menon.

Meanwhile, the inter-college festival of the institute (Manzar) this year will focus on “giving back to the society” and will include various aspects ranging from discussions on Mumbai's power cuts to Right to Information and global warming and climate change.

“We have decided that any surplus generated for any of the events will be given to the Social Service Cell of the institute. And in this context we have also decided to forego the “pro-nite” event,” added Menon.
