London, July 1: A British teenager has been convicted by a court here for causing grievous bodily harm to an NRI at a birthday party where a mob also yelled racist abuse at him.

A jury at Guildford Crown Court held 19-year-old Nicky Chequer guilty of causing bodily harm with intent to Sanjeev Subramanian, 40, at the party in Surrey on April 7 last year.

The birthday party of one Cydney Chopping turned into a “riot” after the girl’s father made racially-insulting comments in front of 150 guests, prosecutors said.

During the melee, a glass was smashed in Subramanian’s face as a mob yelled racist abuse and told him to “go back to the bush”.

The jury convicted Chequer of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Subramanian, a caterer by profession.

The brawl also led to Cydney being charged with perverting the course of justice after she was accused of trying to prevent detectives discovering Chequer’s identity.

Cydney ,19, was found not guilty in the case. She, however accused, her father Mark Chopping, a carpet dealer, of causing the trouble with his “racist” jokes.

“I hate him with a passion. I didn’t speak to my dad for four months. My mum and dad were going to get divorced,” She said.

Subramanian said when he arrived for the party he was greeted by Chopping with the words: “Come this way. It’s four pounds for blacks and two pounds for whites.” The prosecution said Chopping later made similar”racist” comments over a microphone. A group of guests confronted him on the dance floor but others went to help him.

Subramanian said one youth grabbed his arms and moments later a glass was smashed into his face by Chequer.
