UK doesn't feel Pak govt was involved in 26/11

David Miliband

New Delhi Britain on Tuesday differed with India's view that Pakistan's official agencies could have had a role in Mumbai attacks even as it underlined that Islamabad has the "fundamental" responsibility to target the "roots" of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) which was behind the terror strike.

India hoped that Pakistan would hand over the "fugitives of Indian law", notwithstanding Islamabad's refusal to do so, and asked the world community to build pressure on Pakistan in a "concerted" manner to ensure that perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks are brought to justice.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who held "exhaustive" talks with his British counterpart David Miliband, apprised him of details of the Mumbai attacks and its links in Pakistan.

"It is clear where the responsibility lies for Mumbai attacks, it is with the LeT," Miliband said at a joint press conference with Mukherjee after their talks.

"Pakistan government, Pakistani state has the primary responsibility, fundamental responsibility to tackle the roots of this organisation," the British Foreign Minister said.

On Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's view that official agencies of Pakistan could have been involved in the Mumbai strikes, Miliband said "we do not believe the attacks were directed by Pakistani state".

He, however, said it is important to see what is the "approach of Pakistani state towards LeT organisation and the way Pakistani state takes on the LeT."

UK - Fools' Paradise by Hero Vaz on 13 Feb 2009

UK is living in some fools' paradise. This will continue till the country takes a hit from the ISI's terrorists. Then, their eyes will open fully.

All time liars Pak by Geeta on 14 Jan 2009

I don't understand Indian Ministers crying like babies to US and UK as if they will come to India's rescue. On the top of it our Hon'ble PM sending New Year wishes to Zardari. What is this nonsense? Indian Govt. is responsible to take any action, as here the Indians suffered and lost their lives. Indian Govt. should take drastic action against the biggest liars Pak.Now Gilani says ""India Can wait" till they study the dossiers.Look at their blunt attitude. They will take years to study the dossiers and just buying time to plan some more.

deceived by goras ... by Ron on 13 Jan 2009

it's not the first time in indian history that the pherangis have deceived the desi's. wake india, do what seems right as the israel's do and tell the world to shut up as the chinese did.

Continue our diplomacy with friendly countries to prove it by Giri on 13 Jan 2009

This is a classic case of unsuccessful Indian diplomatic effort. Through diplomatic efforts we have to convince US, UK, Saudi, China etc of the links between the LeT and the ISI and the Pak army. That has to be a reasonably strong and credible evidence. We cannot expect Pak govt to accept it. But if we get these friendly countries to agree to it then we have succeeded diplomatically. Once they agree, we can put pressure on these countries to put pressure on Pakistan. Although it is quite a convoluted effort, unfortunately these are our best options now.

Uh! Hello!! by Nikhil on 13 Jan 2009

The shoe wearer knows where the shoe pinches. When the next big terrorist attack happens in the UK and if its links are traced back to terrorist out-fits in Pakistan, I will be curious to see if the UK foreign minister will still blabber such statements.

Dichotomous British by Mahesh on 13 Jan 2009

He is a pommie and what else we can expect from these pommies.

UK and PAK by Subhash on 13 Jan 2009

Pakistan is a creation of the British to creat havoc in the Indian sub continent. Can we expect a fair deal from them? NO.Moreover ,there are so may Pakistanis in the UK that ,their Govt is AFRAID of taking any action againat them,a clear indiaction of that is in the apology from the ROYALS for calling a spade a spade ! ! Once it hits them only then they will realise that playing with fire can burn you.Let us (India) take the course that WE feel is right and target the training camps in a way we choose to do so.

India by Vikram on 13 Jan 2009

Firstly Pak was created as Jinnah wanted it, not because Brit wanted it. But it is certainly true that NO OTHER country in the world would ever like India to become one of the superpowers

Super poewrs don't beg by vik on 13 Jan 2009

Before calling ourselve a super power, do some introspection. Are we really a super power with so much poverty, over population, and substandard living conditions all across. Super powers do not look for vindication of their view by others; they mold the new viewpoint. They really act, not simply issue a statement.

Pakistani terroists by Bhagatsingh on 13 Jan 2009

Pak government involved or not by Arvind K Mathur on 13 Jan 2009

The question is Which PAK Government? Army OR ISI OR the weak recently elected government ?

Milliband - just tooo predictable by satori on 13 Jan 2009

The UK is petrified of Pakistan, there are so many Pakistanis in UK. It seems the UK is afraid of everyone except Zimbabwe. To all Indians - do not EVER expect a condemnation of Pakistani Govt by UK, it is just not in the UK's interest regardless of the truth of the matter.

Nation of shopkeepers by Girish on 13 Jan 2009

Put impediments to trade with Britain and see them admit that even Pakistan is occupying Indian territory!Nation of shopkeepers

Be alert Brits by chanakya on 13 Jan 2009

Look at the face of the person. Looks like a diplomat who want no nuisance in his back yard. By standing with India he will have huge problem in his country with minority populace which he cannot afford. But he needs to undertsand that no area is far away to terrorists. In fact Pak is running National Rural employement gurantee in its own way. It is training its populace with arms and encouraging them terrorise the world to collect more money from the world as terror fighters. are they in any way better than Somalia poor pirates. ??

Brits!! Sound Sensible Please!! by Ramesh on 13 Jan 2009

One of the attackers was captured alive and he admitted to his nationality being Pakistani. However, the Pakistani state did a lot of drama in the aftermath of this man's confession, as well as his parent's confession. Then they started a war hysteria claiming various things and badly strove to incite a military conflict so that the issue of the attack gets drowned. Now they say, they will not hand-over anybody?! What did they do after Indian parliament was attacked? They just put the LeT CEO under house arrest for a few days and released him, and later gave him the Kashmir earth quake relief contract. All this goes to say what? That the Pakistani state is complicit or not? To an extent, one can believe if Pakistan says, it does not fully control its wild west, not so about its eastern border! LeT is the pet dog of Pakistani Military. If the world lets Pakistan off the hook, in the hope that they may not be attacked, then they are mistaken.

UK doesn't feel PAK govt was involved in 26/11 by S.Mehla on 13 Jan 2009

I do agree with this statement from Anand Sharma

UK doesn't feel PAK govt was involved in 26/11 by Anand Sharma on 13 Jan 2009

We are absolute idiots, we are forgetting history and allowing crooks like Britain to pass judgements in our life/death situations. This is the same Britain who whipped us for 350 years, had a law in India that if Indians say it is my country India, they are committing treason against the queen and can be beheaded. The ones who crushed our 1857 struggle for Independence and used to send our beloved saint Mahatma Gandhi to long prison sentences for simple, true statements. They only understand force and the only reason they left India was that Hitler beat them up and they no longer had the power to hold on to their colonies. We should act politely but with strength, there is no other way to survive. We should strike at Pakistan terrorist camps and destroy them, WHATEVER THE COST, otherwise things will keep on getting worse with time. Pakistanis' are experts in befooling US and UK but they play along because internally they are jealous of India. Jai Hind!

Act now by Ram on 13 Jan 2009

I think the time has come to act decisively. It can be military or non military. The fundamental duty of constitution is sanctity to the lives of its citizens, not economic development. I think we have legitimate to hit pak. Forget about USA/UK. GOI is answerable toits citizens , not US/UK.

Some people never learn (like Miliband) by Satindar on 13 Jan 2009

From UK we cannot expect anything better . Mr. Miliband should keep his personal views to himself. Is he sure that the possibility of PAK involvement can be ruled out? No it can't be ruled out. In such a case the normal diplomatic practice is to keep quiet rather than act as a judge or as a middleman.GOI should give him a cold shoulder.

who is to blame by Ris on 13 Jan 2009

Such statements reflect how the govt has handled the issue and what sort of diplomatic lobying is going on??? when our own pm and fm are making different statements ...what can u expect??

Pranab and foreign ministry must go. by Prakashkapila on 13 Jan 2009

Pranab has failed again. We need new resources and new approach. It seems our foreign ministry is not able to form a concensus in world comminity that Taliban and other muslim organisations are same, their goal is same, names change.Even though the results in ground prove our stand our officials

WE GOT TO LEARN OUR LESSONS by B. SRIDHAR on 13 Jan 2009

IT IS SLOWLY BECOMING CLEAR HOW THE WORLD COMMUNITY IS GOING ABOUT THE MUMBAI ATTACKS ESPECIALLY THE US AND THE U.K. THEY ARE SLOWLY BACKTRACKING AND STATEMENTS LIKE THIS IS NOT GOING TO HELP THE WORLD TO GET RID OF TERROR. ALL TERROR ATTACKS CARRIED OUT OVER THE WORLD EMANATES EITHER FROM PAKISTAN OR HAS SUPPORT BASE IN PAKISTAN. THIS IS A SAD TRUTH. AS REGARDS, THE ATTACKS EVEN A NOVICE WOULD CONCLUDE THAT AN ATTACK OF SUCH A MAGNITUDE AND THE WAY THINGS WERE PLANNED WOULD HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE HELP OF THE STATE OF PAKISTAN. THE CONTRADICTORY LIES SPELT OUT BY VARIOUS PAK AUTHROITIES IS A TESTIMONY TO THE FACT THAT PAK WAS INDEED INVOLVED. WE SHOULD SUSTAIN THE PRESSURE AND IF PAK DO NOT OBLIGE THEN WE SHOULD ATTACK WITHOUT NOTICE. WHEN ISRAEL DESPITE OCCUPYING GAZA CAN ATTACK HAMAS THEN WHY NOT WE. WE HAVE A LEGITIMATE RIGHT TO ATTACK PAK.

Our IFS is bloody useless by Binoy Kumar on 13 Jan 2009

I agree with Sridhar. Looks like we have ended up in not having any reliable friends in international community. This has always been the failure of our foreign diplomacy. What for do we feed and pamper these IFS officers who merely drink champagne abroad and do nothing for their country? It nees a revamp, too, like our security apparatus.

Pakistan gameplan by venkat on 13 Jan 2009

India is repeatedly fooled by the world community in fighting the terror. They apply different yardsticks for different countries on how to tackle terror. By absolving state actors of any complicity in the terror, the world community has given leeway to the state actors to carry out such attacks in future and still escape the punishment and accountability. Pakistan would now on will put the blame on the so called non-state actors for all the attacks that is likely to happen in future inspite of the complicity of state actors in masterminding the terror attacks. This very move put India in a more valnurable position now.
