Brown wants India to become a member of an international body that counters terrorist financing -- the Financial Action Task Force -- and also wants to help it to acquire sophisticated equipment to detect people carrying weapons or explosives at ports and airports.
"There's got to be greater cooperation between the major countries and Britain in the fight against terrorism," he told the BBC in an interview on Sunday.
"I want not just China and Pakistan but also India to play their part in cooperating with us so we can root out those who are seeking to use terrorist finance," he said.
"That means India should join what's called the Financial Action Task Force -- it's not yet a member -- so it can play its part in working to deal with terrorist structures," Brown said.
He also called for a hearts and minds campaign to combat ‘extremist ideologies’.
Brown arrived in India from China where he focused on expanding trade and investment and on cooperation against climate change.
In India he will hold talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, meet business leaders and give a speech on Monday on reforming international institutions.

Doing so would be suicidal for the Congress-led UPA Government whose only hope of surviving the next general elections is the 'minority' vote bank. The constituents of this Government value political power more than development and welfare of the people. They know that being in the global vanguard of anti-terrorism would totally alienate from them the 'minority community' and their dream of returning to power would vanish. For that very reason the Government is carefully keeping alive Afzal Guru convicted for waging a war against this country by attempting to kill the MPs. In my earlier posting I have made some serious allegations. If Indian media is really interested in serving the nation, which I doubt, it should seriously research and expose these shameful records of Britain’s tacit support for terrorism against India. Most of my allegations can easily be confirmed by our former Director of Intelligence Bureau Ajit Kumar Doval who at that time was senior diplomat in UK and Dr. Singhvee who was our High Commissioner. What I am alleging is only tip of the iceberg there is lot more and much serious stuff I know of. Sadly our great freedom fighters only managed to replace ‘White Sahibs’ with ‘Brown Babus’. Result? I was banned from contesting elections on Labour ticket. Only recently UK has promised to financially support Pakistani ISI and also MADRASAS. 'UK wants more India cooperation on terrorism' indeed! Where was UK when India wanted UK's cooperation in appprehending Kashmir and Pakistani terorrists who were collecting donations in UK? UK then said they were freedom fighters!!
