Lucknow The newly constructed UP Badminton Academy (UPBA) at Gomti Nagar, Lucknow is proving to be a boon for UP shuttlers. While just a couple of months ago, the state shuttlers got a chance to watch former French Open winner Abhinn Shyam Gupta participating in a state championship which was organised here, now a national junior badminton coaching camp is in full swing at the Academy.

The duration of the camp is from April 25 to May 30. Young shuttlers from different states of India can be seen sweating it out along with some state players in two sessions daily. The training is being by seasoned badminton coaches Surender Mahajan, Venkatesh besides Lucknow SAI coach Devender Kaushal.

Talking to The Indian Express, Kaushal informed that 11 boys and girls whose names had been sent by the Badminton Association of India (BAI) are taking part in the camp which is being held as a part of the long term training development programme. Three more such national junior camps are taking place at Cochin, Bangalore and Nainital. “Though the names of three UP players already feature in the list of BAI, in order to provide a good training to some other top UP players, the UP Badminton Association (UPBA) has also arranged for the coaching of nine more UP players. While the expenses of the ‘listed’ players are being borne by Sports Authority of India (SAI), the expenses of the nine players are being borne by UPBA,” Kaushal informed. “I feel that with the construction of this Academy which is well-equipped with facilities, UP badminton is on path of revival. In a couple of years, UP can now produce players of the calibre of Meena Shah, Suresh Goyal and Syed Modi,” he explained.

Kaushal said that in the first few days, emphasis was laid more more on the stamina aspect whereas now the skill in the game is being taken care of. The camp was formally inaugurated by Sanjay Saraswat, Director SAI (UP & Uttarakhand).

The campers: Boys: Shivam Sharma (UP), Sudarshan (Tamil Nadu), Rajesh Kumar (Bihar), Ujjwal Prakash (Bihar), Arsalan Naqvi (UP), Shafi Akram (Jharkhand), Aman Vaidya (J&K); Girls: Shreya Agarwal (Delhi), Sara Naqvi (UP), Arzoo Thakur (Himachal Pradesh), Sanchali Das Gupta (West Bengal).
