Lucknow At a time when majority of TV soap operas are trying to cash in on TRP ratings by portraying endless 'Saas-Bahu' sagas, depicting both parties conspiring against each other, Uttar Pradesh government has undertaken a diametrically opposite exercise – to promote harmony between them.

The state government has launched an ambitious scheme in which health department officials are playing the role of counsellors giving valuable tips to 'saas' and 'bahus' on how to better their personal relationships and mutual communication.

"We are organising conferences of daughters-in-law and mothers-in-law in every district of the state, to provide them a platform where they can communicate with each other and resolve personal differences, if any," State Health Secretary Rajiv Kapur said.

The objective of the programme, funded through National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), is to motivate mothers-in-law to take better care of their pregnant daughters-in-law.

It has been observed that mutual communication between a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law is missing on important issues relating to their family, the secretary claimed.

"Often mothers-in-law don't pay much attention to their daughters-in-law during pregnancy period which is vital from the health point of view," he said.

Kapur said through these conferences, an effort is being made to educate elderly female members of a family as to how to take care of a pregnant woman.

"This also implies in the case of family planning, as in rural areas, women are often pressurised by the elderly members of the family to raise more and more kids.

"The first step is to encourage discussion between the two parties. While mothers-in-law are being encouraged to interact more with their daughters-in-law, the latter are being asked to consult the former," the health secretary said.

To mobilise the 'saas-baahus' to attend the conferences, the department has roped in Asha workers and auxiliary mid-wives (ANMs).

"Asha workers and ANMs are coming in handy as they are in regular contact with womenfolk and can motivate them to attend the conference," Kapur said.

Besides pregnancy, the conferences are also aimed at addressing varied issues related to girls, he said.

"Efforts are being made to highlight the issue of gender bias towards girls, which is very important from reproductive health point of view," he said.

So far, such conferences have been organised in over a dozen districts in the state.

"The programme was launched last month and a number of districts have already been covered. The response so far is overwhelming. More than 4,000 people attended a conference organised in Lakhimpur district last week," Kapur said.

He said considering the success rate of the scheme, the government now plans to extend it at the micro level.

"We intend to organise such events at block and tehsil levels, but a final decision would be taken at a later stages," he added.

AN ASPIRANT OF THE POST OF PM COULD HAVE COME UP WITH A LOT BETTER IDEA THAN THIS. THIS SHOWS HER BANKRUPTCY OF IDEAS AND IT WILL BE MUCH WORSE IF AND WHEN SHE BECOMES A PM. IT WILL BE THE SORRIEST DAY FOR INDIA TO PUT UP SUCH A PERSON AS A PM.

Try not to be paternalistic by Anupam Gupta on 15 Jan 2009

Good idea and hopefully good exection. Talking about the execution, one must say that the organizers must make make sure that it doesn't sound too preachy or paternalistic. Whatever might be the reality, one has to be diplomatic in passing the message or else once the mother-in-laws feel that they are being touted as the mother of all evils....the money would go to drains....

UNSCRUPULOUS MAYA'S POLITICAL MANOEUVRING. by M.Arun on 15 Jan 2009

Conscientious politicians have to be chosen by the electorate as their representatives if India is to be rapidly industrialised and to elevate itself as one of the advanced democratic industrialised state.

She does not have the capacity do any better. I request Ekta Kapoor to take her in one of her Saas Bahoo Serials and save the state. This woman cannot be defined in words and I feel sorry that we have no choice but to tolerate her because of our democracy system. I appeal top all my UPites to discard the individual gains in favour of national interests and throw MAYA (I hate spelling her name) out.

May's saas-bahu scheme by praveen k on 14 Jan 2009

This lady is perfectly fit to be a VILLAGE OFFICER, nothing more than that. She cannot even envision 1% of what India is, and what India needs, and where India should be going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If people of UP voted her into power, i feel sorry for them.

SAAS BAHU by Niranjan on 14 Jan 2009

WHAT A GRAND DEVELOPMENT. I AM SURE NO OTHER PARTY CAN THINK OF SUCH DEVELOPMENT IDEA WHICH WILL PROMOTE HARMONY AT HOME. BUT UNFORTUNATELY, THE REAL PROBLEM IN A HOME AND AMONG NEIGHBOURS IS DUE TO WATER AT THE PUBLIC TAP, OR POOR DISTRIBUTION OF GRAINS AND OTHER EDIBLE STUFF AND VERY LOW INCOME, IN SHORT ROTI, KAPADA, MAKAN AND BIJLI SADAK PANI. BUT ALL THOSE WILL GO AWAY ONCE THE SAAS-BAHU GET ALONG WELL, RIGHT? WHAT A STATE?

Coronation of the Queen Mother of U.P by Anil Kohli on 14 Jan 2009

This is crass display. It is repulsive and totally unacceptable in a democratic setup. This is not a coronation ceremony of the Queen of India. This lady is flaunting the head gear as a crown.Only god can save this country from such un scrupled politicians, who can let loose their party cadre to extort money so that this Queen can wear a crown on her Birthday. Are there any lower depths that are politicians are yet to hit? Maybe the answer is yes! Let us wait for them to go the whole hog.The day of reckoning for all these is not far. Time is catching up with such shameless elements who have given a bad name to this great country. The day of reckoning for all these is not far. Time is catching up with such shameless elements who have given a bad name to this great country.
