Faizabad, March 4: Coming April, the traffic police in Uttar Pradesh will be dressed in blue.

The decision by the Mayawati government has raised questions whether it is a coincidence that the colour chosen is of the same hue of the ruling party BSP’s flag.

But top police officials cited “weather blues” for shedding the old white uniform.

“The traffic constables, while discharging their duties in adverse weather condition, face rain, dust, mud, crowds and pollution from smoke-emitting vehicles. “Their white uniform becomes untidy very soon, which brings disgrace to them,” Director General of Police Dr Vikram Singh said.

A high-powered committee under the chairmanship of Additional Director General of Police was constituted to bring necessary changes in the traffic police uniform.

“After a few meetings, the committee recommended the new blue colour for the uniform of traffic policemen,” he said.

The DGP approved the recommendations of the committee by exercising the powers granted to him by UP Police Uniforms Act, 1986.

All the district police chiefs have been asked to witch over to the new colour by April one, Inspector General of Police A K Jain said.
