Prime Minister Manmohan Singh won a vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha with a comfortable margin belying predictions of a close contest on a day marred by unseemly scenes over allegations of bribery.

The Prime Minister's motion expressing confidence of the House in the Council of Ministers was carried with 275 votes in favour and 256 against.

In a House with an effective strength of 541, it was not immediately clear how many abstained. The results were announced after nearly an hour when officials corrected the initial figures which showed 253 votes in favour of the motion, 232 against and 2 abstentions in a total vote of 487.

In the din caused by BJP members demanding Prime Minister's resignation and shouting down his speech, Singh laid his reply to the debate on the table of the House.

As Opposition members pressed for a division, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee ordered voting by electronic voting machine.

Even before the final result was announced, ruling alliance members went to the Prime Minister and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to greet them on the victory in the confidence motion, the first in over four years of this government.

The Prime Minister sought the confidence of the House after the Left parties, which provided outside support since May 2004, withdrew it on the issue of government operationalising the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal by approaching the IAEA.

The two-day debate on the motion was often acrimonious but it took an entirely different turn after BJP members shocked the House by producing bundles of currency notes alleging bribes by the Samajwadi Party to them to abstain from voting.

Four BJP members, including former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, were permitted to vote from the inner lobby of the House through slips on account of their ill-health.

Upa had to win the trust vote

REAL VICTORY by TONI SAMUEL on 23 Jul 2008

Firstly, congratulations to UPA and the prime minister. Let the people of India learn from this tamasha and in the next election to vote carefully and honestly. It is very easy to load up a cow with garlands and flowers and ask to save hinduism without any real policies. Don't let Advani fool you. Out of recent mess in the parliament Adavani, VKMalhotra and Mayawati came out as fools. Malhotra, without any proof, claimed that PMO was involved cash for votes and then later BJP is blaming Amar Singh. Mr Advani spent all his time swearing at the prime minister without discussing any national issues. BJP should get rid of people like Advani, Malhotra and the other good for nothing hecklers like Mr Rudy and the other clown with beard who is supposed to be BJP spokesman. BJP only heckled as if they were selling vegitables in the market and had no respect for the parliament. Their last show with money was disgraceful. Better not say anything about Kalawati, sorry I mean Mayawati!!

Trust vote by Sethu on 23 Jul 2008

Congress winning the trust vote reveals the following things: (a) It is certain that crores of rupees changed hands to ensure Govt. victory, but the show of notes by the BJP MPs is too obvious to believe; as Amar Singh said, they are not so naive as to fall in such a trap. It is more likely that the BJP themselves arranged the notes and the drama, when they became sure to lose the vote, so that people will be left with the images of notes flying inside the parliament. But people already know all these things. (b) Secondly, the Left parties completely failed to read the history of Congress not losing a trust/no-trust motion. They should have known better. Because of their immaturity in withdrawing support and pushing for the trust vote, they became the losers, while many MPs became instant crorepatis (c) It is once again proved that BJP has so much to learn the nitty-gritty of Indian politics.Advani's face in the Lok Sabha after the electronic result of trust vote told it all.

Where's Karat ? by Baatul on 23 Jul 2008

Where's Karat? Didn't see him in parliament either. Oh ... I forgot, he doesn't have the people's mandate. Go drown yourself, Karat.

Black day for India by Karthikeyan on 23 Jul 2008

Shame that UPA has been re-elected again after playing such a dirty and nasty politics which never happened in Indian history. If you go back to older days, all such things are initiated by Congress and they will do anything to gain the power. Congress is misleading the people and they are trying to sell our nation to us and mintories for votes and to increase their wealth not nations's wealth. UPA should be voted out. When nation is facing high inflation, Congress is trying something which is not immediately necessary for the nation. If our PM likes US and he can settle in US rather selling the whole nation to US. After playing the dirty and nasty politics, howcome PM, Sonia and other UPA leaders are facing media and people. Even our media is pro-Congress so they will not tell the truth to nation. Our media is also like that. Such a small issue, media will project like anything. such shameful event happened in indian history, but media is sleeping. Keep it up!!!

Black day of INdia by Raj Singh on 23 Jul 2008

Don't you read papers or watch TV? BJP is also for the deal, my dear. They are opposing it only in the 'present form', in other words, using it only to defeat the Govt and come to power. They are more pro-American and pro-Bush. In fact, they tried their best to have such a deal but could not do it. In this modern age, no country can sell itself to another, my dear, especially a great nation like India, even if Congress, UPA etc. all together try for it. Wake up, we need to have agreements and deals, to go forward. Don't be fooled by the Left propaganda. Think of the times when they opposed computerisation tooth and nail. If they had succeeded then, where would have been we now?

Amazing.... by Curious on 23 Jul 2008

Is it that BJP could not do 'it' or the US could not trap BJP in a deal like this ? Would you believe Americans on this or Indian media ?

Black day by Kumar on 23 Jul 2008

Please, come on yaar. You should not be so naive to believe that all those cash came from UPA or SP. It is true that they have purchased votes, but they do it better than this. As Amar Singh said, you must give him credit to be a little more cunning than this! It is BJP's own little drama, when it became certain that they would lose the vote, so that people will be left with the images of notes flying inside the parliament. But people already know all these things, given the circumstances, all our political parties would do anything, even murder to cling on to power.

No confidence motion by S.MANI on 23 Jul 2008

The Editorial in the Indian Expres of 23rd July is on the no confidence motion was, fantastic and telling. The congress, BSP, Communists, SP all call BJP as a communal. I agree with Adgudu that "Minorities, particularly the Muslims, have first right over the national resources" ... this is a great win for minorities in 'secular' India! Is it not a minority appeasement. He is secular and the blood and toil of the 80 crores hindus in building this great bharat. The people should teach these MPs who defected and voted for this dirty deal should be punished at the earliest opportunity in the coming elections. I am proud of the Indian Express which stands 'apart' from other newspapers who are chamchams of the Congress Govt. I wish Indian Express comes out in all the indian languages ( i dont know how many languages it is publshed) as the newspapers like the new Indian express are beckon of light for the people. Well done Indian Express and SHAME to the Govt.

Congratulations by ADGURU on 23 Jul 2008

Congratulations to the person who said "Minorities, particularly the Muslims, have first right over the national resources" ... this is a great win for minorities in 'secular' India!

No confidence motion by Amar Jit Singh Australian on 23 Jul 2008

The so called victory in the vote of confidence is a slur on the fair name of India Formerly the Western press used to praise the biggest democracy ( Indian ) in the world for its matuirity by saying that the coalitions welded with as many as 14 parties are working effectively in India Now the same WEstern press including the Australian dailies are giving the spicy stories about the horse trading and the corruption to win the MPs Both the Age ( Melbourne ) and the Sydney Morning Herald wrote " Even when the speeches were being made on the vote of confidence the horse trading to win the MPs was going on in the back rooms" We are really ashamed of the antics of our politicians We are happy that both the BJP and the left were united on the issue of the treaty After the Congressrout in the 1977 elections the BBC commented " The Indian voters though poor and illiterate know how to vote properly at the proper time " We hope the Indian voters do the same in the coming elections

Voters by YD on 23 Jul 2008

" The Indian voters though poor and illiterate know how to vote properly at the proper time ", but haven't you noticed that those poor and illitrates are rich and "educated" ? Indians are honest only when they are poor and illitrate.

Victory for all people !! by Harsh Mishra, New York on 23 Jul 2008

Good for India's future energy situation. Hard to imagine the potential acute deficiency affecting poor people disproportionately. Nuclear energy route is not the ideal but quicker and better among various others. Now the govt should carefully work to ensure safety and future usage of nuclear technology with the goal of curbing nuclear weapons proliferation. Nuclear energy is good but the weapons are evil for all humanity. Also, there is no need to give in to the US domination. With much wisdom and careful vision, this can be avoided. US seems to have become deficient in its worldview unless Obama fixes it with an unshakable political will. Cheers to Manmohan Singh ji.. a gem amidst the broad decadence of the poitical world !!

Defeated opposition by Ashim Kumar Chatterjee on 23 Jul 2008

The claims of left and NDA combine regarding the sense of the house has fallen flat. The nation has expressed itself through the confidence vote and many surveys conducted on the matter. The opposition should show now some grace and respect this and give some positive ... economic and social agenda- bereft of ideological colours, which are redundent. It is dissappointing to find that they planning to take to agitation. If they do, they should limit themselves to holding rallies, organising single file procession and chains on side street lke the ones intellectuals of kolkata organised over Nandigram and not do anything disruptive to affect any mode of transportation. One respects their right to protest but not at the cost of slightest inconvinience in normal life of common man. Local authorities must watch and act with bonfide punitive measure against leaders of agitation in case anything untowards happen. Leaders must be identified and their responsibilities fixed.

RESPECT WHAT, ASHIM ???? by A NAIR on 23 Jul 2008

10 defection at Rs 25 crores each and 10 abstinence Rs 3 Crores each is Rs 280 Crores. Who paid for it? Now don’t say it was a BJP DRAMA as the facial expression and the abusive language of Mr Amar Singh in the TV interview immediately thereafter gave it away all.

What a farce ! by Curious on 23 Jul 2008

280 Crores will be more than sufficient to install solar panels on the roof-tops of all governement buildings, will it not ?

PARLIAMENT DRAMA by DR SHASHI MOHAN SHARMA on 23 Jul 2008

WHAT A SHAME TO SEE STUPID, IGNORANT AND NOISY DRAMA BY MP'S IN THE NUKE DEBATE /CRISIS. WHAT THESE BUNCH OF ROWDIES ARE SHOWING TO THE YOUNGER GENERATION. WHERE HAS GONE THE PRIDE AND STANDARDS OF PARLIAMENT AS WE SAW IN 70S

Indian Ploitics by Raja on 23 Jul 2008

Amar Singh has been like Rahu/Ketu for values in Indian politics. With his rise in politics, Indian political system and its respect touching Nadir. Speaker Somnath should decisively act and bring culprits to book. He should expel MP's lured away by money / horsetrading whether UPA or NDA or UNPA or left

Horse trading by naresh on 23 Jul 2008

Horse trading can take place in the parliament where the junkies who abstained from casting their votes showed the population what actually they stand for and who they actually are, enuchs. Such politicians will realize when it's elections time. Think BJP's lost credit, just wait and watch.

Now the real problems by Mulayam on 23 Jul 2008

A simple arithmatic:- Congress 275, opposition 256. 10 absent and 5 voted for Congress, a total of 15. All defections from opposition. Now if BJP and voters had not selected/elected criminals and corrupt people as their representative, the result would have been Congress 260 and opposition 271. But a total of Rs250 crores and ministerial postings changed the scene. The biggest losers are the voters who really do not know what democracy is and why they vote. The most dangerous streak in Indian voters is blind dog like loyalty to one party or the other. But at least now the voters will see the real problems of inflation, interest rates, terrorism, Chinese troop movement, Maoist/Naxal violence, illitracy, poverty, stiffeling caste system, police violence, corruption, infrastructure etc. As BBC's Asia business report says that "because of down sliding of India's economy, high inflation and interest rates", world agencies will down grade India's rating. Only voters are to be blamed.

No surprise here... by U R Right on 23 Jul 2008

Nothing to celebrate for Indians. But that does not matter to Uncle Sam. India would have already 'mortgaged' its sovereignity in 'perpetuity' irrevokably by the next election.

India Wins by Anjan Roy on 23 Jul 2008

Congratulation to Dr. Manmohan Singh, the members of his government and those who supported him for this significant victory. This is a victory to India. It is important for India's progress and development to have nuclear energy. Dr. Singh showed tremendous courage and wisdom to lead his government in this crisis. I also congratulate the House Speaker, Mr. Somnath Chatterjee, for his unbending mentality and determination in leading the Lower House of the Parliament in the whole episode. It proved that some of India's politicians can stoop to the lowest for their own gain. At the end the good sense prevailed. I am sure that some leaders will learn from here before they make another mistake.
