Monsoon

South-west monsoon is likely to be below normal this season, government announced on Wednesday raising concerns about its impact on agriculture and economy.

"South-west monsoon from June to September is likely to be below normal," Earth Sciences Minister Prithviraj Chavan told reporters in New Delhi.

He said quantitatively, monsoon rainfall for the country as a whole is likely to be 93 per cent of the long-period average. This is three per cent less than what the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast in April.

Chavan was subjected to a volley of questions, including whether he visualised the monsoon scenario as worrisome, whether the country is in for a drought and whether he foresaw a situation of water-rationing.

"I will not call it worrisome as of now," he said downplaying questions about water scarcity and drought.

"Plans are in place in every department of Government of India as to what needs to be done when there is excess or deficient rains," was his refrain.

According to the forecast, the north-western region of the country is likely to get deficient rains while monsoon is expected to be below normal in north-east and peninsular India. Central India, which is yet to receive rains, is expected to have a normal monsoon.

Oust Congress by Sushil Bhat on 25 Jun 2009

Congress will ruin this country as they have been doing for last 50 years. When will people in India realize this. Congress is like 'Congress Grass' a useless weed that kills productivity. Get back Mr. Vajpayee please...even if he is 90...i don't care.

Where are the Athiests ? by Ram on 25 Jun 2009

When rains become deficit, it will lead to anarchy. Where are my Atheist friends K.Veeramani, M.Karunanidhi and the marxists. Can they get rains by their rational thinking ? Please provide us a solution if there are no rains. Only God is the way to help us from this crisis. People of all faiths, praise the lords and get us peace. Recession and scarcity are also symbol of gods, so that man will not think that he is the all mighty.

Drought around the corner by M.V.Muthu on 25 Jun 2009

UPA could explore the feasibilty of bringing in showers, by out-sourcing the task of invoking the Gods in Heaven to BJP!

Where is Petrol Pump Chor ??? by Rajesh Mehta on 24 Jun 2009

As petrol pump chor, monsoon is late because of BJP and if it had reached on time and rained as per season ..its because of congress. He is from that mentality that everything wrong in this country is due to BJP and everything good is from congress. We already seen great and good work of congress since last 50 years of there rule. Just now in 15 years we made some progress out of which 5 rule of BJP has given solid foundation in starting country to next level. In congress raj , we never heard the word development , we only heard poor and poorest and still the same old chanting again again ..Its only after BJP came , there is something called development and respect is felt by us.But our media biasing towards congress and create an environemnt in general public like BJP is big monster and congress is like sadhu. Where is congress now on black money issue ? There is nothing heard from them and we forgot easily as we are always !!!

Connect all the rivers like Atalji had planned and India will never have to worry about rain and the rain Gods.

Mentally Bankrupt IMD by Dinesh on 24 Jun 2009

El Nino does have an impact on Indian weather especially the Monsoon. However, the semi literates in the Indian Meterological Dept do not factor phenomena such as these and stick to obsolete and irrelevant statistical models. Its better for the nation that this department which is totally mentally bankrupt is disbanded.
