The names of trainers and the places where meticulous training took place are also known to the government, the sources said.
The United States is believed to have even more evidence some of which it has shared with India, they said.
Chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, who was in Pakistan on Wednesday, is believed to have told his Pakistani interlocutors that Washington had enough evidence to show a Pakistani hand in the attack, the sources said.
Sources also refuse to believe that the Pakistani army did not have knowledge of the Mumbai operation given that ISI is controlled by it.
At the same time, sources do not believe that the civilian government in Pakistan is involved in the attack. In fact, one view is that the civilian government itself may be a target of the strike which may be used by the army to heighten tensions with India to return to power.
Washington has asked Pakistan to crackdown on Lashkar-e-Toiba, which now goes under the name of Jamaat-ud-Dawa, and to arrest its chief Hafeez Mohd Saeed because it has evidence of their involvement in the attack, the sources said.
The attack was planned, equipped and organised in Pakistan where the terrorists were trained and provided logistical support.
Contrary to the version that the terrorists used a hijacked Indian fishing boat to reach Mumbai after sailing from Karachi, the view is that much more sophisticated means were used.
The sources spoke of a clear disconnect between the Pakistani civilian government and the all-powerful military establishment, which is causing difficulties for India in dealing with the situation.
Islamabad's about-turn on sending the Director General of ISI to India is cited as an instance of this disconnect.
During a telephone conversation Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after the Mumbai attack, President Asif Zardari had referred to an earlier Pakistani proposal for a meeting between the ISI chief and the head of India's external intelligence agency, RAW.
Singh told Zardari that this was acceptable to India, after which Pakistan government had announced that the ISI head would travel to India.
After a post-midnight call on Zardari by Army chief Gen Ashfaque Kayani this decision was reversed with the President taking cover under a ‘miscommunication’ with the Indian Prime Minister.
Instead it was decided to depute a Director-level officer to India.
When the terror attack took place Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was in India and had consciously decided not to cut short his visit. However, the Indian government was told at 2.30 am that a special aircraft was being sent less than 4 hours later to take him back to Pakistan.
In what observers see as a clear message to the civilian government, the Pakistan army chief's plane was sent to Delhi to pick up Qureshi, who boarded the flight around 7 am.

There is no use now in beating about the bush. It is an admitted fact that we failed on all counts i.e. intelligence,security,and coordination.We as a nation should join hands and decide what is to be done in future to combat terrorism and evil designs of Pakistan.Forget about politics and partisan.We must show our teeths to Pakistan which is believing that it could cow down Indian nation on the nuclear threat.Pakistan is considered a rogue state and it must be brought down on its knees internationally.
India should not attack Pakistan. Why do the people of India want to do the dirty work for the International community? If India attacks pakistan, it would be accepting another outsourcing contract from the West. Indian army was used in world war I and II as cannon fodder, Indians should wise up and not let themselves and their army be exploited in this manner again.
There was a news report that Al Qaida wants Pakistan to gear up for attack on India. They have some 500 suicide ready militants to go to India and create havoc. These people have nothing else to do I think. They just do not want a peaceful life and do not want others also to lay peacefully minding their own business. How these people's mindset has changed. Inhuman is the word. We cannot equate them with animals as even ferocious animals kill only for food and not for fun. These terrorists want to see blood all the while. They should cut themselves up and see it. They also have one another belief that by killing innocents they will straight away go to heaven. I am totally amazed at the irresponsible talk of attacking Pakistan. What do these poeple know about international opinion and UNO and all that? Are we living in a primitive stage of mankind or what? i am as deeply hurt as they are with the Mumbai attack which killed 200 innocent people. But surely we cannot walk into the trap laid for us by the terrorists. I think some pople are simply acting as Sonia's agents. They want to heat up the climate, then Sonia's Congress government attacks Pakistan , then orders the Elections, wins them and sits on our head for another 5 years. Sorry, NO.
Pakis want proof and India gives them then Pakis say that is not enough. Any proof India gave them are not enough. I think India has been bending their backwards to appease Pakis. I think it is duty of govt to deliver justice. Pakistan created this problem and it is not under their control anymore. India has to defend itself, we do not have to go on full fledged war against Pakistan. But we have to deliver justice so attacking terrorist camps is right thing to do. No action is giving open invitation for more attacks in future. If Indian govt can not deliver justice , I hope at least Indians do not forget about it and deliver their verdict when these politician come for your vote.
India, US and Israel should launch a simultaneous attack on Pakistan with not less than 250 Planes and completely DESTROY it Nuclear Capability overnight. Only such an action can de-fang that rabid outlaw state. Such a move will be beneficial to the Civilian government, and People of Pakistan - while it will hurt the Pakistan military's illegitimate ambitions. Such an action will ensure enduring peace in this long troubled spot on Earth. The problem is that everyone knows that this is the remedy, but noone is ready to execute, we need to shake off this inertia and ACT TODAY, TONIGHT, NOW!
